Following the departure of long-time producer Jimmy Miller, the album was self-produced by guitarist Keith Richards and singer Mick Jagger under the pseudonym `The Glimmer Twins`. Taylor, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts played on most of the tracks, while frequent collaborators Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, and Billy Preston contributed additional instrumentation. The album featured the first appearance of percussionist Ray Cooper, who would continue to work with the Rolling Stones into the 1980s. The title track was recorded separately from the rest of the album. The basic rhythm track had been laid down by members of the Faces, including Wood and drummer Kenney Jones, during a jam session with Jagger, David Bowie, and bassist Willie Weeks. Jagger liked the song so much that he brought the basic track to Richards, who added some guitar overdubs, and after some polishing, it was put on the album as-is. History Work began on It`s Only Rock `n Roll following the Rolling Stones` autumn 1973 European tour. Production began in November at Munich, Germany`s Musicland Studios. According to guitarist Keith Richards, `We were really hot (off the road) and ready just to play some new material.`[2] The recording sessions were attended by Belgian painter Guy Peellaert, who Mick Jagger invited to do the album cover after seeing his work in the book Rock Dreams, which featured illustrations of various rock musicians such as the Rolling Stones. Peellaert eventually painted the band as `rock deities`, descending a temple staircase, surrounded by young girls and women worshiping them in Grecian clothing. He`d got over the initial sort of excitement which you can feel on Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. Also, Mick and I felt that we wanted to try and do it ourselves because we really felt we knew much more about techniques and recording and had our own ideas of how we wanted things to go. Goats Head Soup hadn`t turned out as we wanted to – not blaming Jimmy or anything like that... But it was obvious that it was time for a change in that particular part of the process of making records.`[2] Starting with this release, all future Rolling Stones albums would either be produced by themselves or in collaboration with an outside producer. Most of the album`s backing tracks were recorded first at Musicland; solo vocals were recorded later by Jagger, about whom Richards would say, `he often comes up with his best stuff alone in the studio with just an engineer.`[2] The song `Luxury` showed the band`s growing interest in reggae music, while `Till the Next Goodbye` and `If You Really Want to Be My Friend` continued their immersion in ballads. Seven of the album`s 10 songs crack the four-minute mark, a feature that would come to be disparaged during the rising punk rock scene of the late 1970s. Ronnie Wood, a long-time acquaintance of the band, began to get closer to the Rolling Stones during these sessions after he invited Mick Taylor to play on his debut album, I`ve Got My Own Album to Do. Taylor spent some time recording and hanging out at Wood`s house, The Wick. By chance, Richards was asked one night by Wood`s wife at the time, Krissy, to join them at the guitarist`s home.[citation needed] While there, Richards recorded some tracks with Wood and quickly developed a close friendship, with Richards going as far as moving into Wood`s guest room.[citation needed] Jagger soon entered the mix and it was here that the album`s lead single and title track, `It`s Only Rock `n Roll (But I Like It)`, was first recorded. Wood worked closely on the track with Jagger, who subsequently took the song and title for their album. The released version of this song features Wood on 12-string acoustic guitar. It`s Only Rock `n Roll was Mick Taylor`s last album with the Rolling Stones. Similar to receiving no writing credits on the Stones` previous album, Goats Head Soup, Taylor reportedly had made songwriting contributions to `Till the Next Goodbye` and `Time Waits for No One`, but on the album jacket, all original songs were credited to Jagger/Richards. Taylor said in 1997: `I did have a falling out with Mick Jagger over some songs I felt I should have been credited with co-writing on It`s Only Rock `n Roll. We were quite close friends and co-operated quite closely on getting that album made. By that time Mick and Keith weren`t really working together as a team so I`d spend a lot of time in the studio.`[7] Taylor`s statement contradicts Jagger`s earlier comment concerning the album. Jagger stated in a 1995 Rolling Stone interview about `Time Waits for No One` that Taylor `maybe threw in a couple of chords`.[citation needed] Alongside the usual outside contributors, namely Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins and unofficial member Ian Stewart, Elton John sideman Ray Cooper acted as percussionist for the album. Several songs were finished songs and overdubs and mixing were performed at Jagger`s home, Stargroves, in the early summer of 1974. Legacy Author James Hector added that It`s Only Rock `n Roll was a definitive turning point for the band. `The album marked the band’s decisive entry into a comfortable living as rock`s elder statesmen. From this point on, their youth culture importance vanished, and there would be few musical surprises in the future.` Hector concluded with `On It`s Only Rock `n Roll, the band had become what they imagined their mass audience desired them to be. They were wrong.`[25] In 1994, It`s Only Rock `n Roll was remastered and reissued by Virgin Records, in 2009 by Universal Music, and once more in 2011 by Universal Music Enterprises in a Japanese-only SHM-SACD version. The 1994 remaster was initially released in a Collector`s Edition CD, which replicated in miniature elements of the original vinyl album packaging. Two different versions of `Luxury` exist. A shorter version (4:30) is included on the early CD version from 1986, while the 5:01 version was originally released on vinyl in Europe, and on the 1994 and 2009 CD remasters. The film is based on the 1923 memoir Dersu Uzala (which was named after the native trapper) by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, about his exploration of the Sikhote-Alin region of the Russian Far East over the course of multiple expeditions in the early 20th century. Shot almost entirely outdoors in the Russian Far East wilderness, the film explores the theme of a native of the forests who is fully integrated into his environment, leading a style of life that will inevitably be destroyed by the advance of civilization. It is also about the growth of respect and deep friendship between two men of profoundly different backgrounds, and about the difficulty of coping with the loss of strength and ability that comes with old age. The film won the 1976 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, the Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 9th Moscow International Film Festival and a number of other awards. It sold 20.4 million tickets in the Soviet Union and made $1.2 million in the US and Canada. The film opens to a forest that is being cleared for development, and Arsenyev searching for an unmarked grave of a friend he says he buried 3 years ago. The film then flashes back to Arsenyev`s surveying expedition to the area of Shkotovo in Ussuri region in 1902. A topographic expedition troop, led by Captain Arsenyev (Yury Solomin), encounters a nomadic Goldi hunter named Dersu Uzala (Maxim Munzuk) who agrees to guide them through the harsh frontier. Initially viewed as an uneducated, eccentric old man, Dersu earns the respect of the soldiers through his great experience, accurate instincts, keen powers of observation, and deep compassion. He repairs an abandoned hut and leaves provisions in a birch container so that a future traveler would survive in the wilderness. He deduces the identities and situations of people by analyzing tracks and articles left behind. Dersu Uzala saves the life of Captain Arsenyev for the first time when the two are lost on a frozen lake and a sudden blizzard overtakes them. Dersu shows Arsenyev how to quickly build a straw hut for shelter using grass and then, when Arsenyev collapses due to exhaustion, Dersu pulls him into the shelter. The two men avoid freezing to death and are discovered by the rest of their comrades when the blizzard clears. Dersu tells him that his place is in the forest and that tomorrow he will go on his way. The next day he leaves the soldiers by the railroad tracks and returns to wilderness. Five years later in 1907, Arsenyev is on another expedition in Ussuri. He has been mapping mountain ranges for months, all the time holding onto hope that he will run into his old friend Dersu. One night, when at camp, one of his men says they ran into an old Hunter in the forest who was asking about their unit. Instantly hopeful, Arsenyev demands to know where he saw the man and rushes into the forest filled with hope of seeing his old friend. Searching the forest for a few minutes he sees Dersu walking away further into the forest. Calling for him he is overcome with joy as Dersu yells back and then men run to each other. The men embrace and Arsenyev brings Dersu back to camp with him where the two sit by a fire and talk about their time apart. Dersu takes up the job of expedition guide again. The expedition breaks up as Arsenyev, Dersu, and a few men cross a large river by raft, and the rest continue on to try to find a ford to cross with the horses. Arsenyev and Dersu get caught on the raft as the others embark and are quickly rushed downstream. Dersu saves Arsenyev`s life again by pushing him off the raft and telling him to swim toward shore. Dersu is trapped on the raft as conditions on the river become treacherous. Moments before Dersu and the raft crash into the rapids, Dersu jumps onto a branch in the middle of the river. He then directs the party to cut a tree which can reach him before he drowns. Some time passes and the men seem to be in good spirits. They take several pictures with Dersu and all seems to be going well. Arsenyev writes in his journal that some of his fondest memories of Dersu occurred during the beginning of that autumn. A short time later, the expedition party is trekking through the forest when Dersu realizes they are being stalked by a Siberian tiger. Dersu tries in vain to scare the Siberian tiger away telling him that the soldiers will shoot him with their guns. The tiger continues getting closer to Dersu and Arsenyev until Dersu is forced to shoot the tiger. Dersu is instantly distraught over shooting a tiger, stating that Kanga, who is a forest spirit that his people worship, will be unhappy and will send another tiger for him. Dersu becomes more and more irritable, yelling at members of the party and distancing himself from Arsenyev. Dersu`s eyesight and other senses begin to fade with age until he is no longer able to hunt thus not being able to live alone in the forest. Captain Arsenyev decides to take Dersu with him to the city of Khabarovsk. Dersu quickly discovers that he is not permitted to chop wood or to build a hut and fireplace in the city park, nor is he allowed to shoot within the city limits. Despite his love for Arsenyev and Arsenyev`s family, Dersu realizes that his place is not in the city and asks Arsenyev if he can return to living in the hills. As a parting gift, Arsenyev gives him a new rifle. Some while later, Arsenyev receives a telegram informing him that the body of a Goldi has been found, with no identification on him save Arsenyev`s calling card, and is requested to come identify the body. Arsenyev finds that it is indeed Dersu. The officer who found Dersu speculates that someone may have killed Dersu to obtain the new rifle that Arsenyev gave him. As the gravediggers finish their work, Arsenyev finds Dersu`s walking stick nearby, and plants it in the ground beside the grave.

Robert Wilson (born October 4, 1941) is an American experimental theater stage director and playwright who has been described by The New York Times as `[America]`s – or even the world`s – foremost vanguard `theater artist.``[1] He has also worked as a choreographer, performer, painter, sculptor, video artist, and sound and lighting designer. Wilson is best known for his collaboration with Philip Glass and Lucinda Childs on Einstein on the Beach, and his frequent collaborations with Tom Waits. In 1991, Wilson established The Watermill Center, `a laboratory for performance` on the East End of Long Island, New York, regularly working with opera and theater companies, as well as cultural festivals. Wilson `has developed as an avant-garde artist specifically in Europe amongst its modern quests, in its most significant cultural centers, galleries, museums, opera houses and theaters, and festivals`.[2] Early life and education Wilson was born in Waco, Texas, the son of Loree Velma (née Hamilton) and D.M. Wilson, a lawyer.[3] He had a difficult youth as the gay son of a conservative family.[4] `When I was growing up, it was a sin to go to the theater. It was a sin if a woman wore pants. There was a prayer box in school, and if you saw someone sinning you could put their name in the prayer box, and on Fridays everyone would pray for those people whose names were in the prayer box.`[5] He was stuttering and taken to a local dance instructor called Bird `Baby` Hoffman, who helped him overcome his stutter.[6] After attending local schools, he studied business administration at the University of Texas from 1959 to 1962. He moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1963 to change fields, study art and architecture. At some point he went to Arizona to study architecture with Paolo Soleri at his desert complex.[7] Wilson found himself drawn to the work of pioneering choreographers George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and Martha Graham, among others.[8] He engaged in therapeutic theater work with brain-injured and disabled children in New York. The show subsequently traveled to the Nancy Festival in France and to the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It later opened in Paris, championed by the designer Pierre Cardin.[11] The Surrealist poet Louis Aragon loved it and published a letter to the Surrealist poet André Breton (who had died in 1966),[11] in which he praised Wilson as: `What we, from whom Surrealism was born, dreamed would come after us and go beyond us`.[13] In 1975, Wilson dissolved the Byrds and started to use professional actors.[6] In 1983/84, Wilson planned a performance for the 1984 Summer Olympics, the CIVIL warS: A Tree Is Best Measured When It Is Down; the complete work was to have been 12 hours long, in 6 parts. In addition to celebrity subjects, sitters have included royalty, animals, Nobel Prize winners and hobos.[31] In 2011, Wilson designed an art park dedicated to the Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985), situated in the Arabianranta district of Helsinki. His plans for the rectangular park feature a central square divided into nine equally sized fields separated by bushes. Each field will be installed with objects related to the home. For example, one unit will consist of a small fireplace surrounded by stones that serve as seating. The park will be lit by large, lightbox-style lamps build into the ground and by smaller ones modeled on ordinary floor lamps.[32] In 2013 American pop singer Lady Gaga announced that she would collaborate with Wilson as part of her ARTPOP project. He subsequently designed the set for her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance.[33] Wilson also suggested that Gaga pose for his Voom Portraits.[33] Knowing he had an upcoming residency as guest curator at the Louvre, Wilson chose themes from the museum`s collection, all dealing with death. They shot the videos in a London studio over three days, Gaga standing for 14 or 15 hours at a time.[33] Called `Living Rooms,` the resulting exhibition included two video works: one inspired by Jacques-Louis David`s The Death of Marat, hung in the painting galleries, and another in which Lady Gaga brings to life a painting by Ingres.[11] In the Louvre`s auditorium, Wilson hosted and took part in a series of performances, conversations, film screenings, and discussions.[34] The centerpiece of the residency is a room filled with objects from the artist`s personal collection in New York, including African masks, a Shaker chair, ancient Chinese ceramics, shoes worn by Marlene Dietrich and a photo of Wilson and Glass taken in the early 1980s by Robert Mapplethorpe.[11] Personal life Wilson in 2014 Wilson lives in New York. His works are noted for their austere style, very slow movement, and often extreme scale in space or in time. The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin was a 12-hour performance, while KA MOUNTain and GUARDenia Terrace was staged on a mountaintop in Iran and lasted seven days.[citation needed] Language Language is one of the most important elements of theater and Robert Wilson feels at home with commanding it in many different ways. Wilson`s impact on this part of theater alone is immense. Arthur Holmberg, professor of theater at Brandeis University, says that `In theatre, no one has dramatized the crisis of language with as much ferocious genius as Robert Wilson.`[37]: 41  Wilson makes it evident in his work that whats and whys of language are terribly important and cannot be overlooked. Tom Waits, acclaimed songwriter and collaborator with Wilson, said this about Wilson`s unique relationship with words: Words for Bob are like tacks on the kitchen floor in the dark of night and you`re barefoot. So Bob clears a path he can walk through words without getting hurt. Bob changes the values and shapes of words. In some sense they take on more meaning; in some cases, less.[37]: 43  Wilson shows the importance of language through all of his works and in many varying fashions. He credits his reading of the work of Gertrude Stein and listening to recordings of her speaking with `changing [his] way of thinking forever.`[38] Wilson directed three of Stein`s works in the 1990s: Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights (1992), Four Saints in Three Acts (1996), and Saints and Singing (1998). Wilson considers language and, down to its very ingredients, words, as a sort of `a social artifact`.[37]: 44  Not only does language change with time but it changes with person, with culture. Using his experience of working with mentally handicapped children and enlisting the collaboration of Christopher Knowles, a renowned autistic poet, has allowed Wilson to attack language from many views. Wilson embraces this by often `juxtaposing levels of diction – Miltonic opulence and contemporary ling, crib poetry and pre-verbal screams` in an attempt to show his audience how elusive language really is and how ever-changing it can be.[37]: 44  Visually showing words is another method Wilson uses to show the beauty of language. Often his set designs, program covers, and posters are graffiti`d with words. This allows the audience to look at the `language itself` rather than `the objects and meanings it refers to.`.[37]: 45  The lack of language is essential to Wilson`s work as well. In the same way an artist uses positive and negative space, Wilson uses noise and silence. In working on a production of King Lear, Wilson inadvertently describes his necessity of silence: The way actors are trained here is wrong. All they think about is interpreting a text. They worry about how to speak words and know nothing about their bodies. You see that by the way they walk. They don`t understand the weight of a gesture in space. A good actor can command an audience by moving one finger.[37]: 49  This emphasis on silence is fully explored in some of his works. Deafman Glance is a play without words, and his adaptation of Heiner Müller`s play Quartet [de] contained a fifteen-minute wordless prolog. Holmberg describes these works stating, Language does many things and does them well. But we tend to shut our eyes to what language does not do well. Despite the arrogance of words – they rule traditional theatre with an iron fist – not all experience can be translated into a linguistic code.[37]: 50  Celebrated twentieth century playwright Eugène Ionesco said that Wilson `surpassed Beckett` because `[Wilson`s] silence is a silence that speaks`.[37]: 52  This silence onstage may be unnerving to audience members but serves a purpose of showing how important language is by its absence. It is Wilson`s means of answering his own question: `Why is it no one looks? Why is it no one knows how to look? Why does no one see anything on stage?`[37]: 52  Another technique Wilson uses is that of what words can mean to a particular character. His piece, I was sitting on my patio this guy appeared I thought I was hallucinating, features only two characters, both of whom deliver the same stream-of-consciousness monolog. In the play`s first production one character was `aloof, cold, [and] precise` while the other `brought screwball comedy … warmth and color … playful[ness]`.[37]: 61  The different emphases and deliveries brought to the monolog two different meanings; `audiences found it hard to believe they heard the same monologue twice.`[37]: 61  Rather than tell his audience what words are supposed to mean, he opens them up for interpretation, presenting the idea that `meanings are not tethered to words like horses to hitching posts.`[37]: 61  Movement Movement is a key element in Wilson`s work. As a dancer, he sees the importance of the way an actor moves onstage and knows the weight that movement bears. When speaking of his `play without words` rendition of Ibsen`s When We Dead Awaken, Wilson says: I do movement before we work on the text. Later we`ll put text and movement together. I do movement first to make sure it`s strong enough to stand on its own two feet without words. The movement must have a rhythm and structure of its own. It must not follow the text. It can reinforce a text without illustrating it. What you hear and what you see are two different layers. When you put them together, you create another texture.[37]: 136  With such an emphasis on movement, Wilson even tailors his auditions around the necessity of it. In his auditions, `Wilson often does an elaborate movement sequence` and `asks the actor to repeat it.`[37]: 136  Thomas Derrah, an actor in the CIVIL warS, found the audition process to be baffling: `When I went in, [Wilson] asked me to walk across the room on a count of 31, sit down on a count of 7, put my hand to my forehead on a count of 59. I was mystified by the whole process`.[37]: 137  To further cement the importance of movement in Wilson`s works, Seth Goldstein, another actor in the CIVIL warS, stated `every movement from the moment I walked onto the platform until I left was choreographed to the second. During the scene at table all I did was count movements. All I thought about was timing.`[37]: 137  When it comes time to add the text in with movement, there is still much work to be done. Wilson pays close attention to the text and still makes sure there is enough `space around a text` for the audience to soak it up.[37]: 139  At this point, the actors know their movements and the time in which they are executed, allowing Wilson to tack the actions onto specific pieces of text. His overall goal is to have the rhythm of the text differ from that of the movement so his audience can see them as two completely different pieces, seeing each as what it is. When in the text/movement stage, Wilson often interrupts the rehearsal, saying things like `Something is wrong. We have to check your scripts to see if you put the numbers in the right place.`[37]: 139  He goes on to explain the importance of this: I know it`s hell to separate text and movement and maintain two different rhythms. It takes time to train yourself to keep tongue and body working against each other. But things happen with the body that have nothing to do with what we say. It`s more interesting if the mind and the body are in two different places, occupying different zones of reality.[37]: 139  These rhythms keep the mind on its toes, consciously and subconsciously taking in the meanings behind the movement and how it is matching up with the language. Similar to Wilson`s use of the lack of language in his works, he also sees the importance that a lack of movement can have. In his production of Medea, Wilson arranged a scene in which the lead singer stood still during her entire aria while many others moved around her. Wilson recalls that `she complained that if I didn`t give her any movements, no one would notice her. I told her if she knew how to stand, everyone would watch her. I told her to stand like a marble statue of a goddess who had been standing in the same spot for a thousand years`.[37]: 147  Allowing an actor to have such stage presence without ever saying a word is very provocative, which is precisely what Wilson means to accomplish with any sense of movement he puts on the stage. Lighting Wilson believes that `the most important part of theatre` is light.[37]: 121  He is concerned with how images are defined onstage, and this is related to the light of an object or tableau. He feels that the lighting design can really bring the production to life. The set designer for Wilson`s the CIVIL warS, Tom Kamm, describes his philosophy: `a set for Wilson is a canvas for the light to hit like paint.`[37]: 121  He explains, `If you know how to light, you can make shit look like gold. I paint, I build, I compose with light. Light is a magic wand.`[37]: 121  Wilson is `the only major director to get billing as a lighting designer` and is recognized by some as `the greatest light artist of our time`.[37]: 122  He designs with light to be flowing rather than an off-and-on pattern, thus making his lighting `like a musical score.`[37]: 123  Wilson`s lighting designs feature `dense, palpable textures` and allow `people and objects to leap out from the background.[37]: 123  In his design for Quartett, Wilson used four hundred light cues in a span of only ninety minutes.[37]: 122  He is a perfectionist, persisting to achieve every aspect of his vision. A fifteen-minute monolog in Quartett took two days for him to light while a single hand gesture took nearly three hours.[37]: 126  This attention to detail expresses his conviction that, `light is the most important actor on stage.`[37]: 128  In a conversation with theater expert Octavian Saiu, Wilson was asked whether he is disturbed by the fact that his style is often imitated. His response was that `the world is a library`, and therefore every artist is free to borrow from other artists.[39] Props Wilson`s interest in design extends to the props in his productions, which he designs and sometimes participates in constructing. Whether it is furniture, a light bulb, or a giant crocodile, Wilson treats each as a work of art in its own right. He demands that a full-scale model of each prop be constructed before the final one is made, in order `to check proportion, balance, and visual relationships` on stage.[37]: 128  Once he has approved the model, the crew builds the prop, and Wilson is `renowned for sending them back again and again and again until they satisfy him`.[37]: 128  He is so strict in his attention to detail that when Jeff Muscovin, his technical director for Quartett, suggested they use an aluminum chair with a wood skin rather than a completely wooden chair, Wilson replied: No, Jeff, I want wood chairs. If we make them out of aluminum, they won`t sound right when they fall over and hit the floor. They`ll sound like metal, not wood. It will sound false. Just make sure you get strong wood. And no knots.[37]: 129  Such attention to detail and perfectionism usually resulted in an expensive collection of props. `Curators regard them as sculptures`[37]: 129  and the props have been sold for prices ranging from `$4,500 to $80,000.`[40]: 113  Exhibitions Extensive retrospectives have been presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1991) and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1991). He has presented installations at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (1993), London`s Clink Street Vaults (1995), Neue Nationalgalerie (2003), and the Solomon R. The Watermill Center In 1991 Wilson established The Watermill Center on the site of a former Western Union laboratory on the East End of Long Island, New York. Originally styled as `a laboratory for performance`, The Watermill Center operates year-round artist residencies, public education programs, exhibitions, and performances. The center is situated within a ten-acre (4.0 ha) campus of gardens and designed landscape, and contains numerous works of art collected by Wilson.[35] Europe Theatre Prize In 1997 he was awarded the V Europe Theatre Prize, in Taormina, with the following motivation: The Jury of the fifth Europe Theatre Prize has unanimously awarded the Prize to Robert Wilson in recognition of his thirty years` work aimed at creating a personal reinvention of scenic art that has overturned the temporal dimension and retraced the spatial one. He refused to render a mere production of reality and offered an abstract or informal vision of the text and also redefined the roles, whenever possible, through global intervention in the creation of his performances where he was author, director, performer, scenographer and magic light designer. Architect by profession, the artist pursued an indisciplinary language that did not ignore the visual arts in enhancing the importance of the image and, restoring the support of music, he approached dance and simultaneously attempted to find a pure harmonious value in the spoken word, in an ideal tension towards a form of total theater. It has been said that his works can be considered part of a single opus in continual evolution that constitutes the synthesis. During his career Wilson has confronted himself with different genres and drawn them closer thanks to the conformity of language. He has ventured into the production of opera and ballet, he has created musicals sui generis in collaboration with illustrious emerging personalities, he has promoted performances especially with Christopher Knowles, he has directed spectacular fashion parades. His prolific activity as designer and visual artist can be seen in his paintings, sculptures, installations, graphic works, exhibitions. He was awarded the major prize at the Venice Biennale. Nothing new can be achieved without changing the conceptions of organization. He was a decisive promoter of coproduction of festivals since the `70s, of the creation of prototype-performances that could be translated in various nations with new casts, and also of the creation of serial works to be completed later in production studios. Those of you who are boys will, perhaps, spend a great deal of time in reading Greek books; and the girls, though they may not learn Greek, will be sure to come across a great many stories taken from Greek history, and to see, I may say every day, things which we should not have had if it had not been for these old Greeks. You can hardly find a well-written book which has not in it Greek names, and words, and proverbs; you cannot walk through a great town without passing Greek buildings; you cannot go into a well-furnished room without seeing Greek statues and ornaments, even Greek patterns of furniture and paper; so strangely have these old Greeks left their mark behind them upon this modern world in which we now live. And as you grow up, and read more and more, you will find that we owe to these old Greeks the beginners of all our mathematics and geometry—that is, the science and knowledge of numbers, and of the shapes of things, and of the forces which make things move and stand at rest; and the beginnings of our geography and astronomy; and of our laws, and freedom, and politics—that is, the science of how to rule a country, and make it peaceful and strong. And we owe to them, too, the beginning of our logic—that is, the study of words and of reasoning; and of our metaphysics—that is, the study of our own thoughts and souls. And last of all, they made their language so beautiful that foreigners used to take to it instead of their own; and at last Greek became the common language of educated people all over the old world, from Persia and Egypt even to Spain and Britain. And therefore it was that the New Testament was written in Greek, that it might be read and understood by all the nations of the Roman empire; so that, next to the Jews, and the Bible which the Jews handed down to us, we owe more to these old Greeks than to any people upon earth. Now you must remember one thing—that ‘Greeks’ was not their real name. They called themselves always ‘Hellens,’ but the Romans miscalled them Greeks; and we have taken that wrong name from the Romans—it would take a long time to tell you why. They were made up of many tribes and many small separate states; and when you hear in this book of Minuai, and Athenians, and other such names, you must remember that they were all different tribes and peoples of the one great Hellen race, who lived in what we now call Greece, in the islands of the Archipelago, and along the coast of Asia Minor (Ionia, as they call it), from the Hellespont to Rhodes, and had afterwards colonies and cities in Sicily, and South Italy (which was called Great Greece), and along the shores of the Black Sea at Sinope, and Kertch, and at Sevastopol. And after that, again, they spread under Alexander the Great, and conquered Egypt, and Syria, and Persia, and the whole East. But that was many hundred years after my stories; for then there were no Greeks on the Black Sea shores, nor in Sicily, or Italy, or anywhere but in Greece and in Ionia. And if you are puzzled by the names of places in this book, you must take the maps and find them out. It will be a pleasanter way of learning geography than out of a dull lesson-book. Now, I love these old Hellens heartily; and I should be very ungrateful to them if I did not, considering all that they have taught me; and they seem to me like brothers, though they have all been dead and gone many hundred years ago. So as you must learn about them, whether you choose or not, I wish to be the first to introduce you to them, and to say, ‘Come hither, children, at this blessed Christmas time, when all God’s creatures should rejoice together, and bless Him who redeemed them all. Come and see old friends of mine, whom I knew long ere you were born. They are come to visit us at Christmas, out of the world where all live to God; and to tell you some of their old fairy tales, which they loved when they were young like you.’ For nations begin at first by being children like you, though they are made up of grown men. They are children at first like you—men and women with children’s hearts; frank, and affectionate, and full of trust, and teachable, and loving to see and learn all the wonders round them; and greedy also, too often, and passionate and silly, as children are. Thus these old Greeks were teachable, and learnt from all the nations round. From the Phoenicians they learnt shipbuilding, and some say letters beside; and from the Assyrians they learnt painting, and carving, and building in wood and stone; and from the Egyptians they learnt astronomy, and many things which you would not understand. In this they were like our own forefathers the Northmen, of whom you love to hear, who, though they were wild and rough themselves, were humble, and glad to learn from every one. Therefore God rewarded these Greeks, as He rewarded our forefathers, and made them wiser than the people who taught them in everything they learnt; for He loves to see men and children open-hearted, and willing to be taught; and to him who uses what he has got, He gives more and more day by day. So these Greeks grew wise and powerful, and wrote poems which will live till the world’s end, which you must read for yourselves some day, in English at least, if not in Greek. And they learnt to carve statues, and build temples, which are still among the wonders of the world; and many another wondrous thing God taught them, for which we are the wiser this day. For you must not fancy, children, that because these old Greeks were heathens, therefore God did not care for them, and taught them nothing. The Bible tells us that it was not so, but that God’s mercy is over all His works, and that He understands the hearts of all people, and fashions all their works. And St. Paul told these old Greeks in after times, when they had grown wicked and fallen low, that they ought to have known better, because they were God’s offspring, as their own poets had said; and that the good God had put them where they were, to seek the Lord, and feel after Him, and find Him, though He was not far from any one of them. And Clement of Alexandria, a great Father of the Church, who was as wise as he was good, said that God had sent down Philosophy to the Greeks from heaven, as He sent down the Gospel to the Jews. For Jesus Christ, remember, is the Light who lights every man who comes into the world. And no one can think a right thought, or feel a right feeling, or understand the real truth of anything in earth and heaven, unless the good Lord Jesus teaches him by His Spirit, which gives man understanding. But these Greeks, as St. Paul told them, forgot what God had taught them, and, though they were God’s offspring, worshipped idols of wood and stone, and fell at last into sin and shame, and then, of course, into cowardice and slavery, till they perished out of that beautiful land which God had given them for so many years. For, like all nations who have left anything behind them, beside mere mounds of earth, they believed at first in the One True God who made all heaven and earth. But after a while, like all other nations, they began to worship other gods, or rather angels and spirits, who (so they fancied) lived about their land. Zeus, the Father of gods and men (who was some dim remembrance of the blessed true God), and Hera his wife, and Phoebus Apollo the Sun-god, and Pallas Athené who taught men wisdom and useful arts, and Aphrodite the Queen of Beauty, and Poseidon the Ruler of the Sea, and Hephaistos the King of the Fire, who taught men to work in metals. And they honoured the Gods of the Rivers, and the Nymph-maids, who they fancied lived in the caves, and the fountains, and the glens of the forest, and all beautiful wild places. And they honoured the Erinnues, the dreadful sisters, who, they thought, haunted guilty men until their sins were purged away. And many other dreams they had, which parted the One God into many; and they said, too, that these gods did things which would be a shame and sin for any man to do. And when their philosophers arose, and told them that God was One, they would not listen, but loved their idols, and their wicked idol feasts, till they all came to ruin. But we will talk of such sad things no more. But, at the time of which this little book speaks, they had not fallen as low as that. They worshipped no idols, as far as I can find; and they still believed in the last six of the ten commandments, and knew well what was right and what was wrong. And they believed (and that was what gave them courage) that the gods loved men, and taught them, and that without the gods men were sure to come to ruin. And in that they were right enough, as we know—more right even than they thought; for without God we can do nothing, and all wisdom comes from Him. Now, you must not think of them in this book as learned men, living in great cities, such as they were afterwards, when they wrought all their beautiful works, but as country people, living in farms and walled villages, in a simple, hard-working way; so that the greatest kings and heroes cooked their own meals, and thought it no shame, and made their own ships and weapons, and fed and harnessed their own horses; and the queens worked with their maid-servants, and did all the business of the house, and spun, and wove, and embroidered, and made their husbands’ clothes and their own. So that a man was honoured among them, not because he happened to be rich, but according to his skill, and his strength, and courage, and the number of things which he could do. For they were but grown-up children, though they were right noble children too; and it was with them as it is now at school—the strongest and cleverest boy, though he be poor, leads all the rest. Now, while they were young and simple they loved fairy tales, as you do now. All nations do so when they are young: our old forefathers did, and called their stories ‘Sagas.’ I will read you some of them some day—some of the Eddas, and the Voluspà, and Beowulf, and the noble old Romances. The old Arabs, again, had their tales, which we now call the ‘Arabian Nights.’ The old Romans had theirs, and they called them ‘Fabulæ,’ from which our word ‘fable’ comes; but the old Hellens called theirs ‘Muthoi,’ from which our new word ‘myth’ is taken. But next to those old Romances, which were written in the Christian middle age, there are no fairy tales like these old Greek ones, for beauty, and wisdom, and truth, and for making children love noble deeds, and trust in God to help them through. Now, why have I called this book ‘The Heroes’? Because that was the name which the Hellens gave to men who were brave and skilful, and dare do more than other men. At first, I think, that was all it meant: but after a time it came to mean something more; it came to mean men who helped their country; men in those old times, when the country was half-wild, who killed fierce beasts and evil men, and drained swamps, and founded towns, and therefore after they were dead, were honoured, because they had left their country better than they found it. And we call such a man a hero in English to this day, and call it a ‘heroic’ thing to suffer pain and grief, that we may do good to our fellow-men. We may all do that, my children, boys and girls alike; and we ought to do it, for it is easier now than ever, and safer, and the path more clear. But you shall hear how the Hellens said their heroes worked, three thousand years ago. Na `crvenom` i `plavom ` albumu je odrastala moja generacija rođena 60-i-neke. Prvi ples sa jednom devojčicom (zvala se Lidija i došla je u naše IV/s iz Dizeldorfa), na proslavi Nove 1976. u školskoj učionici, odigrao sam uz `Michelle` puštenoj sa `crvenog albuma`... Dok smo bili klinci, više smo voleli `crveni` album, jer su na njemu pevljivije i jednostavnije pesmice Beatlesa iz njihove rane faze, koje su i deca od 10-ak godina mogla da razumeju i prihvate. Kako smo rasli, sve su nam se više sviđale kompleksnije numere iz završne faze, koje su zastupljene na `plavom` albumu. Nekada su svi imali ove duple albume, pa ne da nisu bili na ceni, nego smo se sa njima `šutirali`. Dugo, tokom 90-ih, se nisu mogli prodati ni za par dinara, jer su ih svi imali - a kako i ne, kada su doživeli po 15-ak pressinga. No, vremenom su se proredili, a došle su i nove generacije koje nisu mogle da ga kupe u radnji (ove odlične kompilacije su doštampavane u SFRJ od 1973. do 1988). Danas te ploče imaju visoku, čini mi se i previsoku cenu, imajući u vidu da i dalje nisu retki. U ponudi imam nekoliko primeraka `crvenog` (62-66) i `plavog` (67-70) albuma po nižim, realnim cenama, pa ih pogledajte preko donjih linkova.
