We can find the story of Jim Thompson, who sold Thai silk all over the world. One of the characters is a Russian who in the 1950s ran a hotel in Kathmandu with his Swedish wife: these two characters were inserted, fictionalized, in The mountain is young by Han Suyin. Then there are: a false-Moroccan belly dancer (actually from California), with whom the author had a love affair; a Bali painter; an American sumo wrestler, etc. The stories are really intriguing and there is a set of photos. There are many references to the lost worlds of Conrad, Kipling, Somerset Maugham: the author realizes that the world he describes is dissolving. There also exists a new edition of this book, accompanied by a part where the author tells what happened next to these characters, I would like to read it.
