You cannot push hard, but on tiny little wires you done need to. All I had to do is put the iron on one side of the connection, the solder on the other, and wait a second . . . it suck the solder through the connection and you get a clean nice solder. And the iron is not hot so it is safe and if you are working under-dash in an old car you have no danger of damaging anything. You cannot melt insulation or anything -- it requires metal to metal. It is worthless for large jobs with large wires with large amount of solder. So take it for what it is made to do - fine work without major skill. I have made the best connections in my life with this tool. I keep the big ones for what they are good for. I think much of the criticism is either from professionals that really can do better with a pro model, or people trying to use it where it is not meant to be used *heavy big wire* -- so if you just need an occasional job on small stuff this is a great tool for no money. If you are a pro or are working on big wires, it is the wrong tool for the job.
