Even more than the previous albums, this is a melancholic album and is more blues and soul oriented. The reason for the theme is because Vaya Con Dios was mainly the partnership of Dani Klein and Dirk Schoufs and in 1991 the pair fell out badly. On 24 May 1991 Schoufs, who was only 29, died of a cocktail of medication, drugs and alcohol. The album did very well in Europe, reaching number one in Switzerland and getting platinum certification in four countries, eventually proving to be the most successful Vaya Con Dios album. Time Flies was the first album from Vaya Con Dios which did not end with a song in French.

Edmond Leary and MC Shan produced the entire album, apart from one track which was produced by John Ficarrotta. The album was produced shortly before Snow was imprisoned for a year on an assault charge. Upon his release from prison, his first single `Informer` became a chart topping hit. It later went on to become one of the largest-selling reggae records of all time. East-West released the first single, `Informer,` while Snow was serving time in prison for assault charges. In fact, Snow first watched the `Informer` video while behind bars. Upon his release, a limousine picked him up and he left prison as a recording star. `Informer` went on to become one of the biggest international hits of 1993 and 12 Inches of Snow became one of the top-selling albums of that year. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA with an excess of 1 million copies sold and in Canada was certified triple platinum by the CRIA.

Oasis booked Monnow Valley Studio near Rockfield in late 1993 to record the album and worked with producer Dave Batchelor, whom band member Noel Gallagher knew from his days working as a roadie for the Inspiral Carpets, though sessions were unsatisfactory and Batchelor was subsequently fired. In January 1994, the group set about re-recording the album at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, where sessions were produced by Noel alongside Mark Coyle. The results were still deemed unsatisfactory; in desperation, Creation`s Marcus Russell contacted engineer and producer Owen Morris, who eventually worked on mastering the album at Johnny Marr`s studio in Manchester.
