Engineering Objective To build a full range, rugged, mini-reference monitor to replace the older, aging, 5C Sound Cubes that are still in use worldwide, while offering an improved, more linear frequency response. A full year was spent studying all versions & revisions of the famous little 5C Sound Cubes. Research revealed that there were several driver versions released over the years with widely varying frequency response characteristics. We chose the smoothest, most linear, full-range version of those 5C models to use as our testing benchmark. Next we analyzed their response characteristics in an anechoic chamber and proceeded to implement design upgrades. Realizing the importance of replacing a respected "industry-standard reference monitor" we began by replicating its basic size, function, and sonic character. We wanted to take it up a notch though... First, we addressed the Cabinet Design... The original 5C Sound Cubes were made of ½” particleboard covered with a glue-on wood grain contact paper. We chose to use thicker, denser MDF board because of its high rigidity and inherent low-resonance characteristics. We started with a 165mm (6 1/2") sealed cube design with radiused edges. We then chose an elegant Polyurethane high gloss “RETRO-CREAM” finish. The originals had either screws or on later models plastic binding posts mounted on a recessed plastic cup. We upgraded to high-end nickel plated, machined solid metal binding posts (Dual banana spacing) mounted on a black anodized ,milled and silk-screened aluminum terminal plate. Next we added a 7mm thick neoprene pad embedded into the base of the cabinet to serve as a skid-resistant acoustic isolator. Additionally, for creative mounting situations, we recessed an industry standard 5/8”-27 mic stand mount into the base. Second, We addressed the driver design... The originals were a basic 5” stamped frame design. We designed a proprietary 5.25” die cast aluminum frame driver/cone assembly to exceed the performance of the originals. The mounting bezel is then polished for an elegant appearance. The paper cone, chosen for its musical character, is custom designed & crafted using the finest New Zealand pulp with mica fibers added for lighter weight & rigidity. The cloth surround is made in Japan to exacting uniform thickness tolerances. The Top Plate and T-Yoke of driver are made of Sumitomo 1008 low carbon steel enabling the highest modeled flux density in the gap. The magnets are Y- 40 GRADE (MIL-SPEC) yielding a 43oz. High Power-low distortion motor structure. Performance Objective Studios primarily use 2-way & 3-way larger monitors designed to represent a wide range reference viewpoint at higher listening levels. However, in this newly developing age of High Definition Audio, there is still a need to also hear what your mix will sound like when played back over small “bass-challenged” systems such as televisions, clock radios, computers, car stereos, iPod docking stations, etc. It is important to make mixing judgments based partially on listening to reference monitors that will not impart tonal anomalies caused by crossovers or inferior full range drivers. Particular attention is always paid to the critical mid-range vocal/guitar/keyboard areas. This is where having a full-range monitor without a crossover is truly revealing. Ten months of R&D comparative listening & tweaking went into the voicing of the Avantone MixCubes. The result is a very smooth sounding, full range upgrade from the original 5C Sound Cubes. Listening tests reveal that the MixCubes have a smooth, more open, transparent top end response with extended bass while maintaining their basic original character. Amplification & Wiring Recommended power rating is 50-200 watts of solid state power or 10-100 watts of tube power. It is advisable to use a high quality studio-grade power amplifier. The metal binding posts on the rear of the speaker can accept bare wire, spade lugs, or single or dual banana plugs. It is best to use 12 -16 AWG wire for runs longer than 6 feet.< Placement When positioning the Avantone MixCubes on stands or console bridges it is best to keep them at ear level and slightly angled in towards the engineer. Since they are shielded it is ok to place them near a CRT video monitor or TV without causing any problems. The bottom mic stand mounts will also allow you creative positioning options in unusual studio playback situations. The Original Drivers for the Original Sound Since the “white cone” studio monitor was discontinued, the supply of aftermarket components have become more and more expensive and less and less available. Avantone Pro has created a near exact recreation of the original drivers. Using our global resources and decade of experience in driver construction, we have reproduced the components faithfully, updating the materials to comply with modern environmental requirements. The AV10-MHF tweeter dome went through a difficult engineering process to get the exact phenolic resin doping to match the original performance curve. The AV10-MLF woofer uses custom tooled mechanical parts that mirror the original. We worked closely with one of the original vendors of the original cone to get the exact same stiffness and weight. The only difference from the original is that we use a pressed cone as opposed to a lapped. This allows for tighter matching in every cone we build — meaning this is the first time matched pairs have been available! Both replacement drivers are physically and dimensionally exactly the same as the originals and are “bolt in” hassle-free installation. Both models – SC3010 and SC3012 – feature a very powerful amplifier array, with one amplifier custom specified per driver. All drivers found in these models were completely developed from scratch to deliver a perfect balance of high sound pressure levels, low distortion and optimised directivity. Our proprietary AMT RS6 will redefine your perception of how a tweeter should perform. The RS6 was especially designed for unparalleled precise reproduction, even at high output levels, which will definitely help you take your mixes to the next level. We've also taken great care in the design of the front of the speaker, using an ultra-stiff front plate made out of a combination of rigid plywood and a special inner construction to reduce unwanted resonances. The result? Smooth directivity, very low distortion and a well defined middle and upper frequency range combined with a powerful and tight low end. The SC3010/SC3012 systems were also built with in-wall installations in mind. When used in this manner, acoustic filter modifications can be engaged by adjusting the filter controls to "inwall". And a set of high-density quality foam is provided so that the backfiring bass ports can be physically closed, improving the quality and focus of the speaker's response. The stylish silver module in the middle of the speaker not only houses the midrange woofer and our AMT RS6 tweeter, but it can also be rotated 90-degrees, allowing the speakers to be positioned either horizontally or vertically. This helps to preserve control room sight lines and further optimises acoustic performance. Tech Talk The SC3010 is the smallest of the biggest in our range of main monitors and able to reproduce the entire audible frequency range with an ultra-low level of distortion. One 10" SilverCone bass woofer, with an extreme long excursion, provides for an extraordinarily clean low frequency reproduction down to 29 Hz (-3 dB). Its hexagonal glass fibre layered diaphragm will easily reproduce all audio content, even at higher than usual SPL's. The SC3010 also features our newly developed 5" midrange unit. Its glass fibre layered Rohacel™ sandwich diaphragm delivers a clear and detailed midrange frequency reproduction. Both the 10" SilverCone woofer and 5" SilverCone midrange are equipped with our very low distortion copper cap magnet system. Exclusive to SC3010 – and its larger sibling SC3012 – is our newly developed Air Motion Transformer AMT RS6. This new AMT is 2.5 times bigger than the RS1, RS2 and RS3 Air Motion Transformer units, and it is a crucial part of the system as it helps to couple the middle and high frequencies with great precision. Our team was able to engineer the RS6 to set its crossover frequency at 1800 Hz, a very important frequency for human hearing and subsequently, music production. Each driver is provided with its own separate PWM amplifier that is able to deliver a short-term output power of 250 W per tweeter and midrange channel and 800 W for the low-end driver. With a maximum output level of 114 dB (SPL @ 1 m), you will definitely be able to judge your mixes precisely, whatever their final intended output level is. The SC3010 is a three-way system that combines powerful bass reproduction with a very transparent and present mid-range and crystal clear high frequency reproduction. Make no mistakes: whether you're producing your new hip-hop hit or mastering the contemporary works, the SC3010's will be there for you and they will tell it like it is. Bad mixes no longer have a place to hide. As with every other EVE Audio speaker, you get both balanced XLR inputs and unbalanced RCA inputs for greater convenience. DSP With every EVE Audio speaker, you also get high resolution DSP electronics. One push knob operation and you will have access to accurate volume control and several different filter settings that will help you tailor your monitors to the way you work. If you always avoid digital processing, we've got you covered. The DSP engine is supported with a high quality A/D converter (24bit/192kHz) from Burr-Brown, which delivers a pristine signal to the DSP section. Bass Port Design It's all in the geometry. One of the downside effects of port compression is bass distortion. As you turn up the volume, the efficiency of the port reduces and distortion will increase. A lot of attention went into the development of our bass ports. After much deliberation we opted for a large rear rectangular port with no hard edges, as these provided the best results without unwanted side effects. That's one of the reasons EVE monitors have a high efficiency on the lower frequencies. The results? High sound pressures with tight and punchy bass frequencies that don't cause port distortion. Crank up the volume, and EVE will deliver a round bass. And with no holes to look at every time you glance at your speakers. What does AVAA stand for? Active Velocity Acoustic Absorber How does it work? A microphone will measure the acoustic pressure in front of an acoustic resistance The acoustic resistance is designed to let air through but reducing significantly the pressure A transducer membrane is driven to absorb the volume of air going through the acoustic resistance This significantly reduced the acoustic pressure (between 15 and 120 Hz) around the microphone and around the AVAA What does the AVAA not do? The AVAA is a solution for room modes below 120 Hz and absorbs low frequencies only. The AVAA will not absorb frequencies above approximately 150 Hz. It is therefore not a total solution for acoustically bad rooms. For best results, it needs to be combined with passive absorption in higher frequencies. What effect will the AVAA have in my room? The AVAA will have the same effect, on frequencies from 15 to 120 Hz, as opening a window about 5 to 10 times the size of the AVAA. This will impact sound in the time, frequency and space dimensions. Time: it will significantly reduce reverberation time in these frequencies especially on room modes Frequency: with more precise and tighter bass, the masking effect of higher frequencies is reduced. Details in higher frequencies also become clearer Space: with less indirect sound in the room, the location of the sound is more accurate making the sound image more precise How many AVAAs do I need? An acoustician will be able to compute the effect of a certain number of AVAAs in a particular room. Depending on the dimension and type of room as well as the result required, between 2 and 8 AVAAs are necessary. For very small rooms a minimum of two AVAAs is recommended to have a symmetrical effect. For most normal size rooms (between 20 and 80 m2) it is recommended to use 4 AVAAs and for larger rooms the number can be increased to 6 or 8. Note that this technology has several international patents pending. Two front-facing ports provide bass reflex, enabling the woofer to perform identically in both two-way (90Hz – 2.5kHz) and three-way (250Hz – 2.5kHz) configurations. The 1” pure Beryllium inverted dome tweeter provides numerous advantages, including wide dispersion, amazing frequency response linearity, quick dynamics, and unrivaled impulse response. Trio6 Be - 2 way monitor 2 WAYS MONITOR 1” tweeter, a 5” woofer As a two-way speaker, Trio6 Be employs only the 5” woofer and the tweeter, limiting frequencies to between 90Hz and 20kHz. This configuration provides the perfect compromise when checking the quality of the mix for playback systems with limited frequency response, such as TVs, PCs, cars, and portable speaker systems. The frequency response curve of the two-way configuration is identical, though less extended, to its three-way curve, allowing for a perfect comparison that preserves the stereo image. Focusing on this critical middle frequency range facilitates a good mix and enables the engineer to ensure that the levels are just right. The SC305 combines the power from three different amplifiers to deliver a very efficient, dynamic and low noise sound reproduction. Our three-way systems are developed for critical and detailed listening, not just to deliver power and thunderous bass (although they can do it very well too). With its moderate size and superb technical characteristics, the SC305 model has virtually no competition on the market today. Don't miss the chance and check them out for yourself! Tech Talk Our three-way systems are designed around the concept to distribute the frequencies properly between all individual components and raise the efficiency of your speakers effectively. With the SC305 one of the woofers is delivering sound only up to 350 Hz, functioning as a kind of "bass woofer". The other woofer gives you a fuller range up to the 3000 Hz crossover frequency as a bass-midrange driver. This means less effective physical work being made by each individual woofer, which in turn will result in less mechanical inertia and a more efficient sound transmission. Both woofers consist of our proprietary 5" SilverCone, the same that is used in the smaller SC205 model and features our sophisticated low distortion copper cap magnet system. However, due to the fact that two of these woofers are being used simultaneously, you get a bigger frequency response - down to 50 Hz. The SC305 also makes use of the proprietary AMT RS3 tweeter, which uses a bigger front plate and a bigger internal magnet to drive the AMT tweeter with greater efficiency. The three 50 W PWM power amplifiers won't leave you lacking any power either. All in all, the SC305 will probably be regarded as the single most detailed three-way monitor speaker in the market for its specific size and price range. And no worries determining how to place the SC305 in your room or studio properly. Our DSP section will assist you in choosing the speaker for left and right hand side. So you will always get proper symmetry between your speakers, instead of having to move them around as usual. With a DIP switch, located on rear of the speakers these settings for room adaption can be temporarly locked. As with every other EVE Audio speaker, you get both balanced XLR inputs and unbalanced RCA inputs for greater convenience. DSP With every EVE Audio speaker, you also get high resolution DSP electronics. One push knob operation and you will have access to accurate volume control and several different filter settings that will help you tailor your monitors to the way you work. And if you always avoid digital processing, we've got you covered. The DSP engine is supported with a high quality A/D converter (24bit/192kHz) from Burr-Brown, which delivers a pristine signal to the DSP section. Bass Port Design It's all in the geometry. One of the downside effects of port compression is bass distortion. As you turn up the volume, the efficiency of the port reduces and distortion will increase. We opted for a large rear rectangular port with no hard edges for our bass port designs. That's one of the reasons EVE monitors have a high efficiency on the lower frequencies. The results? High sound pressures with tight and punchy bass frequencies that don't cause port distortion. Crank up the volume, and EVE will deliver a round bass. And with no holes to look at every time you glance at your speakers. Tri pojačala, po jedan za svaki od drajvera, daju (kratkoročnu) totalnu izlaznu snagu od 250W. Jedan od vufera pokriva frekvencije do 300 Hz i služi kao bas, dok drugi vufer emituje zvučnu sliku šireg opsega i funkcioniše kao bas/srednjetonski drajver, crossover frekvencije do 3000 Hz. The SC203 is the perfect solution for professional desktops with a limited amount of physical space, and also for discerning home and gaming users. To further extend its flexibility, each speaker is provided with the FlexiPad, a v-notch shaped orange rubberized pad that allows you to decouple the speaker from its base and angle it precisely at 0°, 7,5° or 15°. Accessories include our SC203 Mounting Adapter, which enables you to mount your speaker directly on any microphone or speaker stand that features a 3/8" thread. And why not combine it with our threaded wall mount adapter, and place your speaker directly on a wall, where it may be more convenient for your own space? The SC203 Mounting Adapter even makes good use of the included FlexiPad: by placing the FlexiPad between the speaker and the mounting adapter you are further decoupling unwanted resonances, and can even better arrange orientation for upright positioning at 0°. As expected, all necessary mounting screws are included. Tech Talk When using woofers in small desktop speakers, some special considerations have to be taken into account. To meet the demands of a precise reproduction in the low frequency region, we've developed a 3" woofer coupled with a 1" voice coil capable of handling a longer linear excursion. With a 16 mm-height voice coil, a linear, back and forth, swing of ±5mm is easily achieved. However, this requires an appropriate multilayer paper membrane material that is capable of withstanding such rigorous use while maintaining consistency. After numerous careful tests, coated paper turned out to be the very best solution in order to meet this demand for low resonance, stability and transmission linearity. From then on, the entire construction design met all the necessary requirements that such small woofers usually entail, including having a chassis basket permeable to air in order to minimize distortions. The large driver magnet works as a powerful "engine" so as to keep the woofer stable, even in border areas. A passive radiator – which you could simply think of as a passive speaker that moves through the force of air – located at the backside of the SC203, reinforces the reproduction of low frequencies and allows the speaker response to go down as low as an impressive 62Hz (-3dB) with very low distortion. Each SC203 setup is configured as a 2-way master-slave system, and features four power amplifiers. Each woofer and tweeter gets its own dedicated 30W PWM amplifier with separate filter section for precise control. And for optimal connectivity, the SC203 houses three inputs – analog RCA, digital optical and USB – which will allow you to conveniently connect a wide range of sources. Furthermore, a volume controlled subwoofer output lets you connect an additional subwoofer (TS107 und TS108) to the master speaker and create a powerful 2.1 system. A DIP switch located at the speaker's back panel allows you to select the SC203's to work as "satellites" from 80Hz and upwards, or as a full range units. The µA.M.T. Tweeter The simple goal of bringing the sound quality, low distortion and high resolution of our now famous A.M.T. tweeter to a much smaller format speaker took us on a many-month journey to find the perfect solution for the SC203. In the end, a new tweeter was born: the new µA.M.T.. This high resolution µA.M.T. delivers an astonishing high frequency resolution combined with extraordinary precision and clarity. The folded membrane of this high resolution µA.M.T. is only 400mm² in surface area, about less than half as our RS1 tweeter (which is used, for example, in the SC204 speaker). An integrated waveguide helps create an optimal dispersion pattern over a wide frequency range. No fighting over your sweet spot with this tweeter! To complete the system, we've used strong neodymium magnets, coupled with a magnetic holder and membrane holder optimized for very low distortion values at the specified SPL. As usual with EVE Audio, no cutbacks were made to save money at the expense of a high quality tuned system. Non-detachable loudspeaker grilles protect both, woofer and µA.M.T. tweeter against damage. DSP With every EVE Audio speaker, you also get high resolution DSP electronics. One push knob operation and you will have access to accurate volume control, balance and several different filter settings (High shelf, Low shelf, LED brightness, Input selector and Speaker-Position such as Flat, Desk and Console) to tailor your set up comfortably and with ease to the way you work. An LED indicates clearly the status of each setting you have chosen. And if you always avoid digital processing, we've got you covered. The DSP engine is supported with a high quality 192kHz/24bit A/D converter from Cirrus Logic, which delivers a pristine signal to the DSP section. And since the PWM amplifiers are directly connected to the DSP, no additional conversion is necessary. Passive Radiator Passive radiator technology can be simply understood as having a passive woofer unit, along with the main active driver that does most of the work. This way, the internal air pressure generated by the active driver is used to move the passive radiator in order to reproduce lower frequencies than standard speakers with similar dimensions. Also, the reason you don't usually see this kind of technology in smaller pro-audio systems is mainly because of cost and engineering concerns. Passive radiators are more expensive and not so easy to precisely tune them. Another advantage of our passive radiator is the complete elimination of all audible noise related to air turbulences, as there are no reflex tubes involved with this design. Unwanted pipe resonances (at multiples of half the fundamental wavelength), which are unavoidable with two-sided pipe openings, are eliminated this way. We've also built a custom suspension for the passive radiator, which exerts a restoring force underneath its tuning frequency, thereby reducing inaudible excursions of the speaker into the subsonic range. This results in reduced intermodulation distortion in the audible spectrum. In short, thanks to the passive radiator technology being used (and a few more engineering secrets, of course), the SC203 works and behaves as a fully fledged full- range speaker, with precise bass reproduction and a very small footprint. The SC205 uses our 5" SilverCone woofer for an extended bass response. This very stiff diaphragm is honeycomb structured and glass fibre coated. Like in other models, such as the smaller SC204, the SC205 is driven by a sophisticated low distortion copper cap magnet system that uses a 1" voice coil responsible for delivering a greater linear excursion. All in all, this produces a bigger dynamic range than you would naturally assume from a speaker of these proportions. The result is an unsurpassed audio transparency that, when coupled with our proprietary AMT tweeter and PWM amplifier, will surprise you with a very powerful and precise low end.
