One is the oldest existing standard McDonald’s. The second would have to be the Carpenters. The singing stars who appealed to the silent majority with the ordinary taste. The third is Wenzel’s Music Town. Downey Records was in the back of Wenzel’s Music Town, a record store serving Southern California`s music lovers for 40 years. Downey Records achieved notoriety with recordings like the Chantays’ ‘Pipeline’ and the Rumblers’ ‘Boss.’ Since the Wenzels retired in 2002, only the McDonalds is still open for business. Wenzel’s Music Town sat at 13117 Lakewood Blvd., just inside the Downey city line, and was one of the best collector’s record stores in Southern California. Tom and Maxine Wenzel ran Wenzel’s as an “oldies” store from 1972, until they retired, but it was at this location that Tom’s father, Bill, and his older brother, Jack, ran the Downey studio and record label from 1959 until the late 60s. The store was divided in two halves, with the more interesting stuff through to the left, through a doorway with a velvet rope across it. Permission was needed to pass the rope, and when I visited in 1978 I was surrounded by four walls racked out with 45s, and was unsupervised. I didn’t know it then but this was the actual room that the recordings had been held in. A collector who knew the store had told me to go to the bathroom, and look up above my head. There, on a rickety old shelf piled high, were the original master tapes from the Downey studio and label. It became part of the experience of visiting Wenzels. The last time I saw those tapes was in 1991, when I interviewed Tom Wenzel for Goldmine Magazine, and the masters remained there in the dark, protected from the California sun, until the store closed. Now, after all these years, we are presenting these wonderful recordings in this series. Very many have never been heard before. INTOXICA! is the first in a series presenting the Downey output by genre. Even more interestingly, the first comp out of the gate is an instrumental collection, but not a surf comp. No Pipeline here. The Downey vaults have been trawled thoroughly in order to bring straight-from-the-masters quality (and in the doing of it, discovering that the released sides were only the tip of an iceberg!). This collection features instrumentals from the gamut of young bands from the California beach communities and as far east as Las Vegas; cabaret acts from the lounges of Lake Tahoe and Palm Springs; mixed in with some great R&B names who used Downey’s studio and cut some fine instros of their own. The theme that links them all together is a quirky sense of cinematic drama and fun, a certain sleaziness, a love of analogue tape echo, and all recorded in an experimental fashion the equal of Joe Meek, who was working contemporaneously in London. This collection will appeal to the instrumental collector, and the lover of lounge-sleaze. This comp has oodles of rare sides and seven unreleased gems. Familiar names likes the Revels, Rumblers, Nevegans and Hustlers rub shoulders with the R&B of Chuck Higgins and Little Caesar. A treat for connoisseurs of the strange!

VIVIANNE S BOOGIE - Vivianne Green As the 1940s turned into the 50s girls were supposed to sing about June and moon or the price of doggies in windows, but across town in the black juke joints a more raunchy sound could be heard. Here the girls taunted and challenged with R&B songs that spelled out far more basic emotions. The excitement generated caused many an indie record company to commit such performances to wax, knowing that jukebox sales would follow. The snag was no airplay. In America censorship was in full flow both in film and on the airwaves. This meant it was almost impossible to get major sales, which in turn means that these records are tough to find some 50+ years later. But here’s where we get lucky. The brothers Bihari, owners of Modern Records, not only recorded much of this genre, but they kept the acetates or tapes. As a result, Ace Records, who now own this material, have been able to put before you 28 tracks of early in-your-face female R&B, 18 of which are previously unissued and a further eight that have not seen prior CD release. The inspiration for this compilation was Cordella Di Milo sides, whose recordings we have released previously on a Johnny Guitar Watson CD as result of his stunning guitar backing. It dawned on us that this virtually unknown singer deserved to be featured on a collection of similarly aggressive female performances. This led to a trawl of the tracks held in the Modern files, which had not been previously issued or had not seen the light of day for over half a century. After filtering out the pop and smoother nightclub-style vocals, along with material used in the “Mellow Cats & Kittens” series, we were left with a fine collection of R&B, including some by artists of whom we know nothing, not even their names. After much research and speculation it was decided that the mystery tracks were worthy of issue even if the artists had to remain anonymous. They take their place for your enjoyment alongside stars like Little Esther and Helen Humes and lesser-knowns such as Edna Broughton and Pearl Traylor. Included are two of the best sides ever cut by Effie Smith, Jimmie Lee Cheatum’s only solo vocal and a host of other female talent, included in a mix of storming R&B and tough blues. Whether it’s Cordella De Milo telling you she ‘Ain’t Gonna Hush’, Effie Smith pronouncing ‘It’s Great To Be Rich’ or Pearl Traylor laying down ‘Daddy, Somebody’s Got To Go’, these Blues Belles have got attitude.

Ono što je sigurno sceni zapalo za oko jeste putujući festival na kojem ovaj izdavač predstavlja bendove sa svog rastera – Invasion from the East. Svake godine Miner itinerer za tu godinu proprati sa kompilacijom, koja praktično predstavlja promo-izdanje sa najinteresantnijim bendova od te godine. Pred nama je šesti nastavak takve kompilacije, dakle Invasion from the East, vol. 6. Kompilacija sadrži osamnaest pesama, koje na najbolji način predstavljaju retrospektivu nedavnih aktvinosti Miner Recordsa, prezentujući je kroz pesme bendova koje su trenutno na Mineru, koji su u pregovorima, ili su jednostavno gosti. Buduću da kompilacija nije žanrovski opredeljena, na njoj se, sasvim prirodno nalazi šarenilo u žanrovskom i stilskom misli, što je i sasvim razumljivo za svakoga ko prati rad ovog izdavača. Da na ovoj kompilaciji nema vremena za prenemaganje, odmah pesnicom u vilicu, Alexandra Hagadone, a.k.a. Sladjana Milošević je, na moje veliko i totalno pozitivno iznenadjenje, bukvalno oduvala sve sa bine iako se bendovi još nisu ljudski ni postavili, čisto da svima ostalima stavi do znanja da je ona još uvek tu. Totalno neočekivana pesma, inače live snimak „Legalize Freedom“ za one koji prate njen stil, jer je ovo odsvirano u totalnom punk-thrash fazonu. Ova pesma je još jedna potvrda da su otrovi najbolji u kratkim blitz-krieg dozama – upadneš, napraviš pokolj, i već u sledećoj milisekundi se izgubiš, pre nego što bilo ko shvati da si i bio tu. Svaka čast. Usledila je pesma projekta Tri minute straha. Tri minute straha je punk projekat iz Smedereva a na ovoj kompilaciji se predstavlja pesmom „Moj put.“ Muzički malo tvrdja pankerica, tako da bi lako mogla da se nadje i na nekon thrash metal albumu benda koji neguje kombnaciju ova dva zvuka. Bend Sanitarium se predstavlja pesmom „Režim“ koji u maniru Partbrejkersa odvaljuje bubne opne i čini da uši krvare. U ovoj i prethodnoj pesmi, tipični mimimalistčki pank rifovi ali odsvrani na potpuno različite načine, dok drugu krasi izuzetna solaža, što samo govori da se radi o veoma kvaltetnim muzičarima. A onda, nakon solaže, za ljubitelje hardcore zvuka, pravi stomp rif koji će vas definitivno pokrenuti. Odličan uvod za Despotic Bullet iz Tuzle i pesmu „Comming Clean“ koja vešto kombinuje thrash i hardcore i stvara pravu zvučnu pozadnu za vokale ala Anselmo, tako da dobijate pesmu koja vuče na Panteru iz Far Beyond Driven perioda, obogaćenu za neke Machine Head mahinacije na gitari. Sve u svemu, dobra pesma za ljubitelje pomenutih pesama. Beogradjani Sigma Epsilon, sa Emilom Ivoševićem (ex-Prisoner) na vokalima i axe-damom Aleksandrom na gitari (Jenner) praše svoj thrash metal. Ono što me je iznenadilo u ovoj pesmi jeste da je Emil počeo da growluje, čak veoma dobro. Ovo je definitivno bend na koji treba obratiti pažnju u budućnosti. A odmah za njima i (pomenuti) Prisoner sa pesmom „Košmar“ sa njihovog zadnjeg albuma. Power metal vokali Čode Gecija (Amors Arrows) su se fantastično uklopili u muzičku pozadinu. Mislim dečko stvarno ima zavidan range i itekako zna da ga koristi. Solaža iz Maiden škole čini ovu pesmu zaista moćnom. Osječka Kymera se ovog puta predstavlja pesmom „Mental Wounds“ u kojoj je elemenat iznenadjenja ženski vokal na početku koji nas uvodi u pesmu, ali kada Pripo pusti svoj već trade-mark growl-scream vokal, rifološki inače jednostavna pesma postaje malj koji udara u kamen i melje ga u prašinu. Škico pokazuje u solaži da zna da vrhunski baratati svojim instrumentom. I taman kada pomislite da ste čuli veći deo dobroga na ovoj kompilaciji, Khargash sa pesmom „Messiah,“ projekat koji sada funkcioniše kao dvojac Karči – Tara Kerac, pokazuje da u rukavima ova dva čoveka još uvek ima skrivenih aduta. Symphonic black metal made in Serbia je nešto što nedostaje srpskoj metal sceni defintvno i hvala Khargashu što postoje i popunjavaju tu rupu. Iz Motovuna u Hrvatskoj nam dolazi bend Their, koji pesmom „Blask Sunlight“ predstavlja svoju verziju melodičnog raw black metala u maniru 1349, samo sa malo skromnijom produkcijom. Samo da Their porade malo na tom segmentu svoje muzike i underground scena u regionu će dobiti još jedno ime čija veličina ma tendenciju rasta. Moj favorit sa ove kompilacije, ali samo zato što zvuče najzrelije su The Bloody Earth iz Niša, koji su nakon dva black metal galopera usporili do te mere sa svojim funeral doomerskim valjanjem poput zle kobi, da deluju kao šok bomba bačena u gomilu navijača na punom stadionu. Kakav Marko Tričković ima growl, sine... kao da peva od negde ispod dijafragme, negde iz predela golemih muda... Uraditi pesmu poput „I Dwell Alone“ (pa i ceo album isto tako kvalitetnih pesama) je već samo po sebi super-herojsko delo. Ovo su momci za svetsku muzičku scenu, da stanu rame uz rame sa recimo bendom Worship, koji onima koji prate ovaj đanr ne treba posebno predstavljati. This Casual Necromancy je projekat koji je kreariran u umu dvojice Kragujevčana, a neguje dark gothic rock zvuk. Moram da priznam da mi ovaj žanr nije toliko blizak, ali kombinacija dva vokala, grubljeg i clean, uz maestralnu upotrebu instrumenata od strane Nikole Zornića, pesma „Forest Odity“ je u maniru The Sisters of Mercy dala svoj doprinos kompilaciji. From Ashes iz Kopera u Sloveniji su otprašili svoju modernu groove metal partituru u pesmi „Savouring the Bloodshed.“ Ako volite Armored Saint, to je od prilike ono što dobijate sa ovim bendom. Radislav Marić zvuči kao Bush, a svaki muzičar je dao svoje sebe, tako da celina zvuči veoma ubedljivo. Alogija je možda i najveće ime na ovoj kompilaciji (naravno, ako izuzmemo legendarnu Sladjanu Milošević). Na njihov kvalitet smo već navikli. Sa pesmom „Callis ad Astra“ (sa njihovog Elegia Balcanica albuma) i poznatim rečima „Tajna Al Aziva...“ kojima ova pesma počinje, ovaj bend će vas odvesti na mistično putovanje, vodjeno braćom Branković, vrsnim gitaristima koji Alogiji daju prepoznatljiv zvuk tako da je sve posle njih zaista tesko dostici visine. Claymorean je lazarevački epic power metal bend sa predivnim ženskim vokalom Dejane Betse Garčević, dok je njen suprug na gitari i mastermnd iza benda koji iza sebe ma nekoliko albuma poprilično popularnih na underground metal sceni kod nas i u okruženju. „Arioh, Knight of the Swords“ je pesma sa kojom se ovaj bend predstavlja na kompilaciji i nakon preslušavanja iste moram da kažem da naša scena ima mnogo razloga da se ponosi što ima ovakve bendove. Pesma počinje baladično, ali kada Vlada počne da slaže rif za rifom, odmah shvatate da ovo nije bend koji izvodi čizi ljubavne pesmice. Odmah znate da za pesme stoji ogroman rad i ljubav prema epskoj fantastici. Svaka čast. Bend Magica nam dolazi iz susedne Rumunije i svira sympho-metal. Ovo je ujedno i četvrti bend sa ženskim vokalom na ovoj kompilaciji što znači da metalke imaju šta da kažu i, u to sam uveren, mogu da ravnopravno stoje rame uz rame sa svojim kolegama. Ana Mladinovici svojim nežnim vokalom predstavlja kontrast malo tvrdjoj muzici koju bend izvodi ali, što je jako interesantno, u njihovom slučaju ovaj kontrast je u totalnoj pozitvi, tako da ističe pesmu „You Should Have Run“ u svakom smislu. Miloš Kračunović, naše gore list iz Beča, predstavlja svoje gitarsko prog-rock umeće u pesmi „Indigo Sky.“ Činjenica da je master Kračunović odsvirao sve instrumente i sve to bez greške uklopio u ono što čujete, govori da se radi o jednom vrsnom multi-instrumentalisti koji itekako zna šta hoće i kuda želi da odvede svoj projekat. Na momente me je podseto na nešto što sam mogao da slušam od Steve Vaia i njegovog solo projekta. Klasični prog-rock rifovi prošarani virtuoznim hvatovima i likovima je ono što dobijate. Kler su bend iz Novog Sadak koji kroz pesmu „Tebi gataju“ prikazuje svoju varijaciju hard-rocka kakav se slušao nekada, tako da je bend uspeo da zvuči istovremeno i retro (stilski) i savremeno (produkcijski). Možda bi ovako zvučala prvih par albuma Divljh Jagoda da su snimljeni danas. Poslednji, ali svakako ne najmanje važni, su old-schooleri III kanal iz Zagreba, koji su otprašili pesmu „Kerozin“ u starom AC/DC fazonu uz dodatak klavijatura a-la Deep Purple, ili da ne idemo predaleko, a-la Atomsko Sklonište. Ali ja sam jedan od onih koji je uveren da naši bendovi ne zaostaju za bendovima koji dolaze iz mnogo bogatjih zemalja i da je u stvari sve samo u marketingu. Dormeo se bolje prodaje od istih istih dušeka drugih prioizvodjača samo zato što ne silaze sa televizije. Ono što mi je drago jeste da se Miner Records ponovo pokazao kao izdavač (sa upravo takvom filozofijom. Da sumiramo, kompilacija za primer i za ponos izdavaču, a svakako način na koji se uspešno može i treba predstavljati minuli rad na tom polju. Kada bi u našoj zemlji bilo više izdavača koji tako razmišljaju i rade, scena bi nam bila mnogo jača, iako je i sada za svaki respekt. Stoga, mnogo sreće izdavaču i puno sreće u promovisanju muzičkog puta i filozofije koji očigledno daje rezultate i to niko ne može da opovrgne i izbriše.
