Original, made in Germany Knjizica od 4 str. Odlicno ocuvano Motown The Supremes were an American female singing group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown`s acts and are, to date, America`s most successful vocal group[1] with 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100.[2] Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown`s main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity,[2] and it is said that their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.[2] Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original group, are all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit.[3] They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations).[3] Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. During the mid-1960s, the Supremes achieved mainstream success with Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & the Supremes, and replaced Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Ross left to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell and the group reverted to being The Supremes again. During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene joining until, after 18 years, the group disbanded in 1977. Diana Ross & The Supremes – Stop! Original, made in EU Knjizica od 8 str. knjizica 5 Cd 3/3+ ima par sitnih povrsinskih linijica koje ne uticu na reprodukciju zvuka, radi odlicno Yes is the tenth studio album by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, released on 18 March 2009 by Parlophone. The album was recorded throughout 2008 and was produced by Brian Higgins and his production team Xenomania.[13] Xenomania also co-wrote three of the tracks. Guitarist Johnny Marr and string arranger Owen Pallett appear as well.[14] `Love Etc.` was released on 16 March 2009 as the album`s lead single.[13] Studio album by Pet Shop Boys Released 18 March 2009 Recorded 2008 Studio Abbey Road (London) Genre Synth-pop Length 48:39 Label Parlophone Producer Brian HigginsXenomania Background and release Yes debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 27,639 copies, the duo`s highest-placing album since Bilingual (1996).[15] Early sales figures predicted that the album would enter at number one,[16] but its release was beset by distribution problems and Yes proved unable to hold onto its midweek position. The download version erroneously went on sale through the iTunes Store three days before its official release date, rendering 2,500 sales ineligible for the chart, while, the following week, a number of suppliers of the physical album reported stock level problems.[17] The closing track `Legacy` was subject to censorship in China for political sensitivity reasons, as it contains the lyric `governments fall`. The song was changed to an instrumental.[18] The album was released in multiple formats, including a digital version that included a 48-minute track-by-track commentary on the album, and an 11-disc vinyl version limited to 300 copies, with each disc containing a different album track on the first side and a corresponding instrumental version on the second.[19] The double CD edition of the album incorporated a bonus disc titled Etc., which featured mostly instrumental dub mixes of six album tracks, as well as a new song called `This Used to Be the Future`, which features guest vocals by Philip Oakey of the Human League. A standard, single-disc vinyl LP was also issued, but did not coincide with the international CD and download release. Yes spawned three further singles. On 1 June 2009, `Did You See Me Coming?` was released worldwide on a number of physical and digital formats, backed with three new B-sides.[13] A limited German-only `Beautiful People` CD and download followed in October. The five-track Christmas, Pet Shop Boys` first EP release,[20] was released on 14 December 2009, with `All Over the World` acting as the principal radio promo and gaining a music video. The album was nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Yes was supported by a comprehensive world tour that stretched across 2009–2012. A recording of the tour made in London in December 2009 was released in a CD/DVD package on 15 February 2010 as Pandemonium. Yes was re-released on 20 October 2017 (along with Elysium) as Yes/Further Listening 2008-2010. This reissue was digitally remastered and contained two bonus discs of B-sides, demos, remixes and rarities from the era. Artwork The album sleeve was designed by Mark Farrow and Pet Shop Boys. The tick on the cover consists of 11 coloured squares, each one representing a track.[21] It was inspired by German artist Gerhard Richter (who is referenced in the album`s opening track, `Love Etc.`), specifically his 4900 exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery and the stained glass window in Cologne Cathedral.[22] The album`s cover was nominated in the 2010 Brit Insurance Design Awards shortlist in the Graphics category.[23] Track listing All tracks are written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, except where noted. Odlicno ocuvano knjizica 5 Cd 4+ The Soul Sessions is the debut studio album by English singer and songwriter Joss Stone, released on 16 September 2003 by S-Curve Records. The album consists of cover versions of soul songs from the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to a cover of the White Stripes` 2001 song `Fell in Love with a Girl`. In 2004, The Soul Sessions was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and was nominated for a MOBO Award for Best Album.[2][3] Released 16 September 2003 Recorded 9 April – 12 May 2003 Studio The Hit Factory Criteria (Miami)[a] The Studio (Philadelphia)[b] Mojo (New York City)[c] Genre Soul[1] Length 42:06 Label S-Curve Producer Steve GreenbergMichael ManginiAhmir `Questlove` ThompsonBetty Wright The Soul Sessions was produced by Miami soul singer Betty Wright and S-Curve Records chief executive officer Steve Greenberg. Stone worked with veteran Miami soul musicians Benny Latimore, Little Beaver, Timmy Thomas and Wright herself. She also worked with contemporary musicians such as neo soul singer Angie Stone and the alternative hip hop group the Roots. Stone told MTV News that she felt intimidated by the credentials of the musicians that worked on the album. `It was weird because they`ve worked with so many great, great singers. I`m talking the best. I kind of walked in, just like this little girl and started singing.`[4] Critical reception Professional ratings Aggregate scores Source Rating Metacritic 74/100[5] Review scores Source Rating AllMusic [1] Blender [6] Entertainment Weekly B+[7] The Guardian [8] The New Zealand Herald [9] Rolling Stone [10] Stylus Magazine C[11] The Village Voice C+[12] Yahoo! Music UK [13] The Soul Sessions received positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 74, based on 15 reviews.[5] Jon Caramanica of Rolling Stone stated that `Stone shines on this impressive covers set` and that `[s]he chooses songs wisely.`[10] AllMusic`s Thom Jurek wrote that Stone `has unique phrasing and a huge voice that accents, dips, and slips, never overworking a song or trying to bring attention to itself via hollow acrobatics.`[1] Jim Greer from Entertainment Weekly noted that Stone `does have an extraordinary voice`, but added that `the only misguided ploy on The Soul Sessions is a Roots-produced slo-mo cover of a White Stripes tune.`[7] Russell Baillie from The New Zealand Herald opined that `with her strong, emotive voice she nails it time and again, and with performances that aren`t an excuse for the vocal acrobatic show you imagine this would have been had Stone been America`s next bright young thing.`[9] The Guardian`s Dorian Lynskey described her singing as `rich, mature and agile but not showy`.[8] Nick Duerden of Blender magazine commented that `Stone`s voice is remarkably authentic, and the atmosphere she conjures is smoky and sleazy, pure mid-`60s Detroit.`[6] Jason MacNeil wrote for PopMatters that her voice is `more of a soulful voice than those so-called soul divas out there today` and that it `oozes sex appeal as Benny Latimore`s piano weaves some magic.`[14] At The A.V. Club, Keith Phipps remarked that `Sessions establishes Stone as a formidable interpreter.`[15] Andrew McGregor of BBC Music felt that the album `seems a bit of an artistic compromise, music from the rule book rather than the heart.`[16] Similarly, The Village Voice critic Robert Christgau viewed Stone`s covers as `the kind of soul marginalia Brits have been overrating since Doris Troy was on Apple`.[12] All tracks are produced by Betty Wright, Steve Greenberg and Michael Mangini, except `Fell in Love with a Boy` and `The Player`, produced by Ahmir `Questlove` Thompson, Wright, Greenberg and Mangini, and `I`ve Fallen in Love with You`, produced by Greenberg and Mangini. Khan set up his Naughty Boy Productions record and production company. He would find his break by producing Chipmunk`s 2009 top-ten single `Diamond Rings`, featuring a then unknown Emeli Sandé. Naughty Boy released his own debut single as a signed artist in 2010. `Never Be Your Woman` samples White Town`s 1997 number-one single `Your Woman` and featured British grime artist Wiley and Sandé on the chorus; it reached the top ten in the UK and is included as a bonus track on Hotel Cabana. The collaboration marked the start of a partnership between Naughty Boy and Sandé which is seen throughout Hotel Cabana and Sandé`s debut set, Our Version of Events (2012). Hotel Cabana is R&B, soul, garage, pop and hip hop music productions record, with influences from orchestral and Bollywood music. Naughty Boy describes it as an `audio-visual experience` and a concept album based on a luxury hotel where musicians come to perform. Hotel Cabana reunites Naughty Boy with Sandé on eight collaborations, as well as features from other British artists such George the Poet, Sam Smith, Bastille, Tinie Tempah, Ella Eyre, Gabrielle, Wretch 32, Mic Righteous, Maiday, Chasing Grace, Ed Sheeran, and American rapper Wiz Khalifa, who appears on the album`s fourth single overall, `Think About It`, with Eyre. Ava Stokes, Tanika, Thabo and RØMANS make additional appearances on the US version of the album which was released by Virgin Records on 6 May 2014. Prior to release, Hotel Cabana was promoted with several video trailers which included the collaborating artists arriving at the fictional hotel. It was also preceded by the release of three singles, including the two top-ten Sandé collaborations: `Wonder` and `Lifted`, as well as the UK Singles Chart-topper `La La La` which featured Sam Smith. Upon release, the album received generally favourable reviews from music critics, who praised the production, but with some criticism towards the concept, execution and some collaborations. Hotel Cabana made its chart debuts at number two in the UK, number five in Scotland and twenty-five in Ireland.

It was their first album since 1999`s Yesterday Went Too Soon. The album was recorded at Great Linford Manor in Milton Keynes during most of 2000 and was produced by Gil Norton. Following a return to live performances of their own, after performing for most of the year at various festivals and the release of the singles `Buck Rogers` and `Seven Days in the Sun` the album was released on 23 April 2001. Two further singles—`Turn` and `Just a Day`—followed the album`s release, in which the latter was not on the album, but as a B-side on `Seven Days in the Sun`. The album initially received mixed reviews from the music press but was received well by the public and in retrospect by critics, reaching number five on the UK Albums Chart. It is the last album to feature drummer Jon Lee before his death the following year. Background Following the minor commercial success of their highly regarded 1999 album, Yesterday Went Too Soon, the band appeared at the Manic Millennium concert at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, South Wales, supporting fellow Welsh band the Manic Street Preachers, before a headline show at the London Astoria the following year. During this time Grant Nicholas, the group`s frontman and principal songwriter, began to write new material for a future album, with songs such as `Buck Rogers` and `Seven Days in the Sun` emerging through the course of the year.[1] Versions of the newly composed songs were performed many times during the course of 2000 at various festivals such as V2000 (in which `Oxygen` was performed, and broadcast on MTV UK), the Glastonbury Festival and T in the Park, before the band then embarked on a mini-tour playing small venues in December. Lyrically a lot of the album is inspired by Grant Nicholas ending a long-term relationship around the time of writing the record. Mainly in songs such as `Buck Rogers`, `Piece by Piece`, `We Can`t Rewind`, `Turn`, `Tell All Your Friends` and `Satellite News`. During the summer of the same year, Feeder began to finalise the song demos while on breaks from touring. The band recorded at the Milton Keynes recording studio, Great Lindford Manor, which comprises a family living upstairs and the studio downstairs. Producer Gil Norton worked alongside the band. In an interview, Grant said that there were periods of time in which there was friction between him (Gil) and the band, but said that despite the occasional arguments, they still remained good friends,[2] and continued to work together on the next two studio albums. Original, made in Germany Knjizica od 12 str. knjizica 5 Cd 4 Out of Time is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M., released on March 8, 1991, by Warner Bros. Records. With Out of Time, R.E.M.`s status grew from that of a cult band to a massive international act. The record topped the album sales charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom, spending 109 weeks on U.S. album charts and enjoying two separate spells at the summit, and spending 183 weeks on the British charts and a single week at the top. The album has sold more than four and a half million copies in the United States and more than 18 million copies worldwide.[2][3] The album won three Grammy Awards in 1992: one as Best Alternative Music Album, and two for the first single, `Losing My Religion.` Released March 8, 1991 Recorded September–October 1990 Studio Bearsville (Woodstock, New York)John Keane Studios (Athens, Georgia) (recording)Soundscape (Atlanta, Georgia) (strings)Paisley Park (Chanhassen, Minnesota) (mixing) Genre Alternative rock[1] Length 44:08 Label Warner Bros. Producer Scott LittR.E.M. Out of Time combines elements of pop, folk and classical music heard on the band`s previous album Green, with a new concentration on country elements that would continue on 1992`s Automatic for the People. It features guest appearances by KRS-One and Kate Pierson from The B-52`s.[4] Preceded by the release of `Losing My Religion,` which became R.E.M.`s biggest U.S. hit, Out of Time gave them their first U.S. and UK No. 1 album. The band did not tour to support the release, although it did make occasional appearances on television or at festivals. In Germany, it is the band`s best-selling album, selling more than 1,250,000 copies, reaching 5×gold.[5] Out of Time was the first R.E.M. album to have an alternative expanded release on compact disc, including expanded liner notes and postcards. In Spain, a contest was held to have a limited edition cover with the winner being an abstract oil painting. The album was featured in Time magazine`s unranked list of The All-Time 100 Albums.[6][when?] For the 25th anniversary the album was remastered. The standard version of the reissue comes with a second disc of demos, the deluxe version adds a third disc featuring live acoustic tracks.[7] It was released through Concord Records on Nov. 18, 2016. Original, made in EU Knjizica od 12 str. Odlicno ocuvano knjizica 5 Cd 5 Rockferry is the debut studio album by Welsh singer Duffy, released on 3 March 2008 in the United Kingdom by A&M Records. It was released in the United States by Mercury Records. Taking four years to record the album, Duffy worked with several producers and writers including Bernard Butler, Steve Booker, Jimmy Hogarth, and Eg White. Primarily a soul recording musically, Rockferry is composed of ballads, torch songs, and up tempo songs in the style of 1960s pop music. It was well received by music critics, who praised the record`s musical and lyrical depth and occasional darkness, Duffy`s vocal performance, and the record`s contemporary instrumentation and production which created a warm sound. Music critics favourably compared Duffy`s work on Rockferry to the music of Dusty Springfield and Duffy`s contemporary Amy Winehouse. Rockferry was a commercial success, reaching number-one in several music markets. It was the fourth best-selling album of 2008 worldwide according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry[1][2] and the highest of that year in the United Kingdom.[3] The album was still in the top five of the UK Albums Chart a full year after its release, spending most of those weeks in the top ten albums, and a significant amount in the top three. In 2010, it was ranked as the 22nd best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK.[4] The album has won a number of awards since its release, including the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 51st annual ceremony (2009).[5] Duffy also won three awards at the 2009 BRIT Awards for her work on Rockferry including Best British Album, whilst Butler was given the Producer`s Award. It was also among ten albums nominated for the best British album of the previous 30 years by the Brit Awards in 2010.[6] A total of five singles were released from the album. The first single, `Rockferry`, introduced Duffy`s music to European music industries, whilst the second and lead single internationally, `Mercy`, was an international hit, topping over twelve music charts and becoming the third-best-selling single of 2008 in the UK.[3] Follow-up single `Warwick Avenue` was another successful single, whilst `Stepping Stone` did not replicate this earlier success. Rockferry was re-released as a deluxe edition on 24 November 2008, preceded by the lead single `Rain on Your Parade` which became the fifth overall single from the album. Parfitt`s `Oh Boy`; the song was later released as a B-side to the single `Rockferry`.[10] Lee moved Duffy to Crouch End in London, orchestrating a meeting between Duffy and Suede`s ex-guitar player Bernard Butler.[11] Lee, with independent record label Rough Trade Records, would eventually manage Duffy.[12] After Butler had given Duffy a soul music `education` by downloading tracks on to her iPod that she could listen to while around London or travelling back to Wales, the pair co-wrote with her and helped create a new retro sound.[13] The music included tracks by Al Green, Bettye Swann, Ann Peebles, Doris Duke, Scott Walker, Phil Spector and Burt Bacharach.[14] Duffy later told The Guardian that Bettye Swann became one of her `biggest inspirations`, with Duffy being particularly influenced by her song `Cover Me` because `it marks the time I got interested in physical contact. I was 19, and here was a woman singing `Cover me, spread your precious love all over me.` It`s very tender, but it`s also, hilariously, quite crude.`[15] Duffy was contracted to A&M Records (UK) on 23 November 2007.[16] By this time, she was finalising her debut album, to be titled Rockferry, after Rock Ferry, a suburb of Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, where her grandmother lives.[17] She performed on the BBC Two television show Later with Jools Holland,[18] which resulted in a second appearance on the related broadcast Hootenanny, where Duffy performed with Eddie Floyd. On 22 February 2008, she appeared on Later with Jools Holland for a third time and performed `Rockferry`, `Mercy`, and `Stepping Stone`. Duffy also made appearances on the BBC Two television programme The Culture Show on 23 February 2008, performing `Mercy`. In January 2008, Duffy came second to Adele in the annual BBC News Online poll of industry experts `Sound of... 2008`, which ranks acts about to emerge in the coming year.[19] According to Duffy, `The album took nearly four years to make. We had to hire cheap, tiny studios and sometimes there would be three-week periods between writing and recording.` Bernard Butler, who was not initially paid, produced four songs for the album, including the single, `Rockferry`.[20] The singles `Mercy` and `Stepping Stone`, were co-written and produced by Steve Booker, and the second single `Warwick Avenue`, by Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White. `Mercy` was the last song written for the album.[21] Music and lyrics Duffy revealed that both `Mercy` and `Stepping Stone` are autobiographical; `Mercy` is about `sexual liberty` and `not doing something somebody else wants you to do`, and `Stepping Stone` is about not expressing her feelings to a person she fell in love with.[22] `Warwick Avenue` was the second single released from the album. The song occurred when Duffy, then 19 years old, was familiarising herself with the London Underground and accidentally found herself at the Warwick Avenue station. Original, made in Germany Knjizica od 10 str. Odlicno ocuvano Reload is a 1999 album by Tom Jones. It contains fifteen duets with a range of artists including Van Morrison, Cerys Matthews, Stereophonics, Robbie Williams and Portishead, recorded with their usual record producers and in their usual studios. The tracks are mainly cover versions, with a new version of one of his own songs, `Looking Out My Window` (1968), and one original track, `Sex Bomb`. Reload became the highest seller of Jones` career, reaching number one on the British charts in 1999 and again in 2000. Its biggest single was the collaboration with Mousse T, `Sex Bomb`, which reached number 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and was later used in a 2003 episode of The Simpsons (a show Jones had guest starred on in 1992). The album has sold more than four million copies worldwide.[1] Tom Jones ‎– Reload Label: Gut Records ‎– VVR1009302, V2 ‎– VVR1009302 Format: CD, Album Country: Europe Released: 09 Sep 1999 Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: Pop Rock, Synth-pop TracklistHide Credits 1 –Tom Jones With The Cardigans Burning Down The House Arranged By [Horns] – Hello Bobadee Backing Vocals – Lynette Koyana, Maurits Carlsson, Patrik Bartosch, Per Sunding, Tore Johansson Bass – Magnus Sveningsson Drums – Bengt Lagerberg Guitar – Lasse Johansson*, Peter Svensson Guitar [Additional] – Pece Masalkovski* Horns – Jens Lindgård, Petter Lindgård, Sven Andersson (3) Keyboards – Lasse Johansson* Keyboards [Additional] – Tore Johansson Mixed By – Jeremy Wheatley Music By, Lyrics By – Christopher Frantz*, David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth Producer – Tore Johansson Vocals – Nina Persson 3:39 2 –Tom Jones With Stereophonics Mama Told Me Not To Come Backing Vocals – Victy Silva Bass – Richard Jones (6) Drums – Stuart Cable Engineer – Bob Kraushaar Keyboards – Tony Kirkham Music By, Lyrics By – Randy Newman Producer – Bird And Bush Producer [Additional Production] – Stephen Hague Programmed By, Percussion – Andy Duncan Vocals, Guitar – Kelly Jones 3:00 3 –Tom Jones With Robbie Williams Are You Gonna Go My Way Arranged By – Guy Chambers Arranged By [Brass] – Guy Chambers, Steve Sidwell Backing Vocals – Claudia Fontaine, Sam Brown Baritone Saxophone – Dave Bishop Bass – Fil Eisler, Paul Turner Drums – Chris Sharrock Guitar – Fil Eisler Mixed By – Hefner Moraes* Music By, Lyrics By – Craig Ross, Lenny Kravitz Producer – Guy Chambers, Steve Power Tenor Saxophone – Chris White Trombone – Neil Sidwell Trumpet – Paul Spong, Steve Sidwell, Stuart Brooks Vocals – Robbie Williams 3:27 4 –Tom Jones With The Divine Comedy All Mine Arranged By – Joby Talbot Baritone Saxophone – Jamie Talbot Bass – Bryan Mills, Chris Laurence Bass Trombone – Pat Jackman*, Roger Argente Cello – Dave Daniels*, Martin Loveday, Paul Kegg Drums – Miggy Barradas* Engineer [Additional] – Andy Scade Engineer, Mixed By – Jon Jacobs Guitar – Ivor Talbot Horns – Jim Rattigan, Nick Busch*, Phil Eastop*, Richard Clews Music By, Lyrics By – Adrian Utley, Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow Organ [Hammond] – Stuart `Pinkie` Bates* Percussion – Rob Farrer Piano – Joby Talbot Producer – Jon Jacobs, Neil Hannon Trombone – Mike Hext, Neil Sidwell Trumpet – Andy Crowley, Maurice Murphy, Steve Waterman, Stuart Brooks Viola – Bruce White, Garfield Jackson, Katie Wilkinson, Peter Lale Violin – Ben Cruft, Boguslav Kostecki*, Chris Tombling, Dave Woodcock*, Dermot Crehan, Everton Nelson, Gavyn Wright, Jackie Shave, Jim McLeod, Mark Berrow, Pat Kiernan*, Perry Montague-Mason, Rebecca Hirsch, Vaughan Armon* Vocals – Neil Hannon 3:59 5 –Tom Jones With Space (4) Sunny Afternoon Bass – Dave Palmer* Drums – Leon Caffery* Guitar – Jamie Murphy Horns – Jens Lindgård, Petter Lindgård, Sven Andersson (3) Keyboards – Franny Griffiths* Music By, Lyrics By – Raymond Davies* Producer – Tore Johansson Vocals – Tommy Scott* 3:26 6 –Tom Jones With James Dean Bradfield I`m Left, You`re Right, She`s Gone Drums – Greg Haver Keyboards – Nick Nasmyth Music By, Lyrics By – William E. Records in the US. It spent a total of 14 non-consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart (including ten consecutive weeks between 18 January and 22 March 1986), nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the US and 34 weeks at number one on the Australian Albums Chart. Brothers in Arms was the first album certified ten-times platinum in the UK[1] and is the eighth-best-selling album in UK chart history.[2] It is certified nine-times platinum in the US and is one of the world`s best-selling albums, having sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.[3][4][5] The album won a Grammy Award in 1986 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical and Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards; the 20th Anniversary Edition won another Grammy in 2006 for Best Surround Sound Album. Q magazine placed the album at number 51 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. It was also among ten albums nominated for the best British album of the previous 30 years by the Brit Awards in 2010, ultimately losing to (What`s the Story) Morning Glory? by Oasis Brothers in Arms was recorded from October 1984 to February 1985 at AIR Studios on the island of Montserrat, a British overseas territory in the Caribbean.[7] The album was produced by songwriter Mark Knopfler and Neil Dorfsman, who had engineered Dire Straits’ 1982 album Love over Gold and Knopfler`s 1983 soundtrack album Local Hero.[8] Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums recorded on a Sony 24-track digital tape machine. The decision to move to digital recording came from Knopfler`s constant striving for better sound quality. `One of the things that I totally respected about him,` Dorfsman observed, `was his interest in technology as a means of improving his music. He was always willing to spend on high-quality equipment.`[8] Before arriving at Montserrat, Knopfler had written all the songs and rehearsed them with the band. The studio lineup included Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), Alan Clark (piano, Hammond B-3 organ and synthesisers) and Guy Fletcher, who was new to the band, playing a synth rig that consisted of a huge new Yamaha DX1, a couple of Roland synthesizers and a Synclavier. The band’s then drummer Terry Williams was present at the start of the sessions before being temporarily replaced.[9] The band`s second guitarist Hal Lindes was either fired or quit at the start of the sessions (Lindes was formally replaced in December 1984 by Jack Sonni, a New York-based guitarist and longstanding friend of Knopfler`s, although Sonni`s contribution to the album was minimal).[10] The studio itself was small, with a 20-by-25-foot (6 m × 8 m) recording space that offered virtually no isolation. `It was a good-sounding studio,` Dorfsman later recalled, `but the main room itself was nothing to write home about. The sound of that studio was the desk,` referring to the Neve 8078 board.[8] Knopfler and Dorfsman utilised the limited space to best effect, placing the drum kit in the far left corner, facing the control room, miked with Sennheiser MD 421s on the toms, an Electro-Voice RE20 and AKG D12 on the kick drum, a Shure SM57 and AKG C451 with a 20 dB pad on the snare, 451s for overheads and the hi-hat, and Neumann U87s set back a little to capture `some kind of ambience`.[8] They placed the piano in a tight booth in the far right corner of the studio, miked with AKG C414s. The Hammond B3 was placed nearby, with its Leslie speaker crammed into an airlock next to the control room. Illsley`s bass amplifier was recorded inside a small vocal booth with a Neumann FET 47 and a DI unit. Knopfler`s amplifiers were miked with 57s, 451s, and Neumann U67s. Fletcher`s synths were placed in the control room.[8] During the recording of `Money for Nothing`, the signature sound of Knopfler`s guitar may have been enhanced by a `happy accident` of microphone placement. Knopfler was using his Gibson Les Paul going through a Laney amplifier. While setting up the guitar amplifier microphones in an effort to get the `ZZ Top sound` that Knopfler sought, guitar tech Ron Eve, who was in the control room, heard the `amazing` sound before Dorfsman was finished arranging the mics. `One mic was pointing down at the floor,` Dorfsman remembered, `another was not quite on the speaker, another was somewhere else, and it wasn`t how I would want to set things up—it was probably just left from the night before, when I`d been preparing things for the next day and had not really finished the setup.`[8] What they heard was exactly what ended up on the record; no additional processing or effects were used during the mix.[8] According to a Sound on Sound magazine interview with Neil Dorfsman, during the first month of the recording sessions the performance of then-permanent drummer Terry Williams was considered to be unsuitable for the desired sound of the album. Williams was not fired from the band, but he was released from the recording sessions and temporarily replaced by jazz session drummer Omar Hakim, who re-recorded all the album`s drum parts during a two-day stay before leaving for other commitments.[8] Both Hakim and Williams are credited on the album,[11] although Williams` only contribution was the improvised crescendo at the beginning of `Money for Nothing`. The remaining tracks all featured Omar Hakim as drummer,[12] as Dorfsman and Knopfler made the decision to erase Williams` contributions and replace them with those of Hakim; however, all the music videos that were released from the album featured Williams.[13] Although Andy Kanavan was briefly recruited as Dire Straits` new drummer, Terry Williams rejoined the band for the promotional concert world tour.[11] A defective batch of recording tape at AIR Studios resulted in the loss of part or all of three album tracks, leading to follow-up sessions being recorded at the Power Station in New York during early 1985[10] (including the addition of a Jack Sonni guitar synthesizer part to `The Man`s Too Strong`)[citation needed]. During this time, overdubs were recorded with further New York musicians including Michael and Randy Brecker, Mike Mainieri (who`d previously contributed vibraphone to Love Over Gold) and Jimmy Maelen, plus trumpeter Dave Plews and Average White Band saxophonist Malcolm Duncan. When Illsey sprained his wrist in a roller-skating accident, several prominent New York studio bassists were hired to record or re-record several basslines on the record (Tony Levin performing on `One World`,[10] with contributions elsewhere from Saturday Night Live house band bassist Neil Jason). Composition Brothers in Arms has been described musically as a pop rock album.[14] The music video for `Money for Nothing` received heavy rotation on MTV, and it was the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network launched on 1 August 1987.[15] It is one of only two Dire Straits songs on a studio album not to be solely credited to Knopfler (the other being `The Carousel Waltz`, which opens Making Movies), with guest vocalist Sting given a co-writing credit due to the melody of the repeated `I want my MTV` (sung by Sting) in the song`s fadeout echoing the melody of the Police`s `Don`t Stand So Close to Me`.[16] `Walk of Life` was a number two hit in the UK Singles Chart in early 1986 and a number seven hit in the US Billboard Hot 100 later that year. The song was nearly left off the album, but was included after the band out-voted producer Neil Dorfsman. On the second side of the album, three songs (`Ride Across the River`, `The Man`s Too Strong` and `Brothers in Arms`) are lyrically focused on militarism. `Ride Across the River` uses immersive Latin American imagery, accompanied by synthesized pan flute, mariachi trumpet, a reggae-influenced drum part and eerie background noises. `The Man`s Too Strong` depicts the character of an ancient soldier (or war criminal) and his fear of showing feelings as a weakness. Written during the 1982 Falklands War, `Brothers in Arms` deals with the senselessness of war.[17] In 2007, the 25th anniversary of the war, Knopfler recorded a new version of the song at Abbey Road Studios to raise funds for British veterans who he said `are still suffering from the effects of that conflict.`[18] Personnel Credits adapted from album liner notes.[53] Dire Straits Mark Knopfler – guitars and vocals John Illsley – bass guitar and vocals Alan Clark – keyboards Guy Fletcher – keyboards and vocals Omar Hakim – drums Terry Williams – drum intro on `Money for Nothing`[8] Additional musicians Nature of contributions uncredited on album; contributions added where known. Michael Brecker – saxophone on `Your Latest Trick`[10] Randy Brecker Malcolm Duncan Neil Jason Tony Levin – bass on `One World`[10] Jimmy Maelen Mike Mainieri Dave Plews Jack Sonni – guitar synthesizer on `The Man`s Too Strong`[citation needed] Sting – vocals on `Money for Nothing

It is their last studio album recorded with drummer and singer Phil Collins before his departure in 1996 to pursue solo projects full time. The album marked the return of band activity following an almost four-year hiatus after touring their previous album, Invisible Touch (1986). We Can`t Dance was a worldwide commercial success for the band. It became the band`s fifth consecutive No. 1 album in the UK and reached No. 4 in the US, where it sold over 4 million copies. Between 1991 and 1993, six tracks from the album were released as singles, including `No Son of Mine` and `I Can`t Dance`. The latter received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals in 1993. Genesis toured in support of We Can`t Dance in 1992, playing large stadiums and arenas across North America and Europe. Background In July 1987, the Genesis line-up of drummer and singer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford wrapped their 1986–1987 world tour in support of their thirteenth studio album, Invisible Touch (1986). The 112-date tour, attended by an estimated 3.5 million people, was extremely taxing on the group, particularly for Rutherford following his father`s death and almost losing his son Harry due to a difficult birth.[8][9] The band then entered a three-and-a-half year period of inactivity, during which each member continued with his respective solo projects. Collins achieved further worldwide commercial success following the release of his solo album ...But Seriously (1989), while Rutherford`s band, Mike and the Mechanics, had also begun to have hits.[10] Banks and Rutherford expected Collins to leave the band during this time, but he stayed on to record another Genesis studio album with them.[11] The band had initially agreed to enter production in 1990, but it was pushed to 1991 because of Collins`s lengthy solo tour.[12][13] The album`s title derived partly from the popularity of dance music and its presence in the charts at the time.[9][8] Genesis recorded We Can`t Dance from March to September 1991 at their private recording studio named The Farm in Chiddingfold, Surrey.[14][11] The trio were keen to work together after such an extensive break, and after two-and-a-half months of what Collins described as `chopping away, fine-tuning, and honing down all these ideas`, they had completed some fifteen tracks.[15][8] They originally considered releasing a double album, but realised most people would be listening to their work on CD which gave them the additional time they wanted to present more of their musical ideas.[16] As with Genesis (1983) and Invisible Touch, none of the material on We Can`t Dance was conceived beforehand, and the band instead developed songs through lengthy improvisational jams in the studio. This was a deciding factor for Collins to remain in the band despite his solo success as he enjoyed the task of writing songs with his bandmates from nothing.[12] A typical session would involve Banks and Rutherford playing chords on the keyboard or guitar, respectively, with Collins devising a drum pattern with a drum machine, which allows him to sing notes and dummy lyrics. The words he sang may then be used to form a lyric or help create atmosphere for the song.[13] Genesis authorised the filming of some recording sessions for the first time for their No Admittance documentary, which aired on national television. Banks later admitted that the band avoided `any creative work` with the film crew present because they found it difficult, adding: `As soon as they were there, we shut off`.[17] Collins supported his view and pointed out a change in the atmosphere of working when someone from the filming crew entered the room.[12] In a departure from their previous albums, Rutherford avoided playing a guitar synthesiser and only plays a Fender Stratocaster and two Steinbergers, one of them a GM series model that was new for the time, but on the song `Tell Me Why`, he is playing a Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar.[18] He had asked the manufacturer to customise one with a larger body to suit his tall frame but they declined, leaving him to use a cardboard cutout of a body he wished for and sending it to luthier Roger Giffin to make it.[19] He played all his guitar parts with a Groove Tubes amplifier that was suggested to him by his roadie and technician Geoff Banks.[19] For recording, they enlisted then 28-year-old Nick Davis as co-producer and engineer who had previously worked with Banks and Rutherford on their solo projects, with the band also handing production duties.[14][15] This marked the end of their association with Hugh Padgham which had begun with Abacab (1981). Rutherford said the group decided to switch producers before work on the album had begun, and insisted they were pleased with Padgham`s contributions, but felt it was the right time for a change after having done three albums with him (Padgham had also produced Collins`s four solo albums throughout the 1980s).[19][9] Davis was keen to feature Rutherford`s guitar more prominently as an instrument than previous Genesis albums, and felt his approach was successful on some of the tracks on We Can`t Dance.[20] Banks took a liking to some of Davis`s strong opinions towards certain aspects of recording and instruments which presented him the challenge of finding other ways of recording.[9] Following a six-week break during the summer of 1991 the band reconvened and completed the mixing in late September, selecting a final 12-track running order that spanned 71 minutes.[15] Banks said that compared to the more direct nature of Invisible Touch, the style of We Can`t Dance offered more of a sense of mystery with effort put into each track having its own `individual quality`, yet have an atmosphere that runs through the entire album.[15] Songs In a similar way to the writing of Invisible Touch, the band initially allocated roughly one third of the album to each member, who was then responsible for the lyrics to their collection of songs. Banks said having one person work on a set of lyrics was a better way of carrying an idea through.[15] In the end, We Can`t Dance saw Collins contribute a greater amount of lyrics than before; his efforts praised by Rutherford who considered his words for its songs among his best in Genesis history. Collins went further and rated his lyrics on We Can`t Dance as some of the best of his career and said, `Obviously, the music stimulated me`.[15] In a week during which Banks and Rutherford left the studio for promotional work, Collins started to write lyrical ideas; according to Rutherford `he just couldn`t stop himself after that. He found he had dead time on his hands`.[9] Several songs deal with serious matters and social issues. `No Son of Mine` tackles the subject of the domestic abuse of a 15-year-old boy, which originated with Collins repeating the phrase `no son of mine` as a dummy lyric during the writing sessions, rather than a song concerning social commentary.[9] `Dreaming While You Sleep` concerns a hit-and-run driver and his guilt after failing to stop at the scene of the accident. The former contains a sample of a sound that Rutherford achieved as he was `messing about bending two notes` that Banks had recorded from a microphone on his E-mu Emulator which he then sampled and slowed down, creating a noise he compared to an elephant`s trumpeting.[19][21] The ten-minute `Driving The Last Spike` is about 19th-century Irish navvies who helped built the railways in the UK, and the poor and unsafe working conditions they had to endure. Collins wrote it after being given a book on the subject by a correspondent who sought to produce a television show about it.[9] Banks used a Hammond organ patch on the track, which referenced his prominent use of the instrument early in Genesis` career. The other long track, `Fading Lights`, came out of group improvisation and it is sort of a goodbye song from Phil to the band Genesis, he left after the tour for this album.[22] `Since I Lost You` was written by Collins for his friend Eric Clapton, following the death of the guitarist`s son Conor, on 20 March 1991. Banks and Rutherford were the only members in the studio that day, and played what music they had written to Collins the following day. Collins said, `Straight away, I was singing the things you hear on the record`, and wrote a set of lyrics based on the incident, not revealing what they were about to his bandmates until he had finished them.[13] Some lines were from a real-life conversation Collins had with Clapton following the incident.[23] `Tell Me Why` criticises the Gulf War and the plight of the Kurdish people in its aftermath. Collins got the idea from a television news report while he was having dinner with his wife and daughter. `So I just mixed my feelings with previous thoughts about Bangladesh and Ethiopia`.[24][23] The serious material was balanced by shorter and lighter songs. `I Can`t Dance` was a criticism of models who appeared in jeans adverts popular at the time, and built around a heavy Rutherford guitar riff.[25] Banks noted his electric piano part was one of the most minimal riffs he has played on record and had thought of a style heard on the 1968 song `Feelin` Alright?` by Traffic.[21] `Jesus He Knows Me` was a barbed parody of the televangelist movement in the US, which the band members had seen while touring the country.[25] `Living Forever` deals with a cynical view of society`s obsession with modern diets and lifestyles.[15] Its original working title was `Hip-Hop Brushes` after Collins acquired new drum disks for his E-mu SP-1200 drum machine and devised a hip-hop oriented drum pattern using its brush sound, as he recalled, in around ten minutes which the group then played from and developed the song from it.[21] Two songs, `On the Shoreline` and `Hearts on Fire`, were cut from the album due to time constraints; instead, both songs were released as B-sides for the singles `I Can`t Dance` and `Jesus He Knows Me` respectively, as well as appearing in the Genesis Archive 2: 1976–1992 and Genesis 1983–1998 box sets. Among the keyboards Banks plays on the album are the Korg 01/W Music Workstation, Korg Wavestation, Ensoniq VFX, Roland JD-800, Roland Rhodes VK-1000, and E-mu Emulator III; the latter enabled Banks to create samples in stereo.[21] Genesis supported the album with the 68-date We Can`t Dance Tour across the United States and Europe from 8 May to 17 November 1992, with their longtime touring musicians Chester Thompson on drums and Daryl Stuermer on bass and lead guitars.[30] It also marked the 25th anniversary of the band, and featured a 20-minute medley of their older material recorded in the 1970s.[8] For the first time since 1978, the setlist did not include `In the Cage` from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974).[17] Booking agent Mike Farrell said Genesis spent millions of their own earnings to put the tour together.[17] Designed specifically for stadiums, the set featured a 200 ft-long (60.9 m) stage designed by Marc Brickman and built to the band`s specifications with 80 ft (24.3 m) sound towers and three 20 x 26 ft (6 x 7.9 m) moveable Sony Jumbotron screens that alone cost $5 million, all needing 42 lorries to transport. The advantages of these was that images from videos or artwork was projected on them to illustrate some songs, while live camera footage of the band gave everyone in the arena a front row view.[17][8] Collins sang with an in-ear monitoring system which he credited to singing more in tune and more effortlessly than before as he felt he was always `fighting` with the band`s sound. It also reduced his worry about the condition of his voice on tour.[17] Collins would not tour with Genesis again until he returned in 2006 for their Turn It On Again: The Tour. Recordings from several dates were released on the live albums The Way We Walk, Volume One: The Shorts (1992) and The Way We Walk, Volume Two: The Longs (1993). The dates at Earl`s Court in London were filmed and released as The Way We Walk - Live in Concert.
