In part, our extensive release schedule in the past has meant that, while the well is still by no means dry, it’s not as full as it used to be. Additionally, demand has dwindled a little, as its audience gets older and less interested in ownership of CDs. Also, the relentless onslaught of lesser quality “out of copyright” issues has eaten away at the core market for R&B and given a false perspective on the true worth of material that’s being, for want of a better term, legally bootlegged. We still love R&B, and we will continue to support it as long as people keep calling for it. This month, we’re delighted to bring you another volume in our series of CDs devoted to the labels of the late John Grattan Dolphin. Our previous Dolphin compilation highlighted repertoire that Lovin’ John had recorded for release on his first label, Recorded In Hollywood. This time, the repertoire is largely drawn from the stack of tapes that Dolphin produced or bought with the intention of issuing them on his later labels, Money and Cash. With one exception, all tracks come from original mastertapes that Ace acquired from Dolphin’s widow, Ruth, some years ago. Dolphin’s scattergun approach to running his labels meant that he would be recording and releasing high profile acts like Memphis Slim, Pee Wee Crayton, Joe Houston and Jimmy Witherspoon one day, and extremely obscure ones like Vernon Anders and Al Calloway the next. For every two sides that he issued, he left two in the can. Indeed, some singers heard here, such as Ervin “Big Boy” Groves’ protégée Little Margie, recorded many sides over several sessions without so much as one finding its way onto the market. He may not have released everything he cut, but Dolphin held onto the majority of his reels of tape. Because of this, Ace can bring you another helping of quality R&B, in the direct-from-the-studio-floor quality. (There’s plenty more where this comes from. Even as you’re reading these words, another volume is being planned for release in early 2010). As we are wont to do on these occasions, we’ve enlisted the help of top notch west coast researcher-annotator Jim Dawson to tell the story behind the songs and artists - and as ever, Jim’s left no stone unturned in his quest to uncover new facts about the most terminally obscure names on this set. Half a century may have passed since John Dolphin really was the Toast Of the Coast, but his musical legacy has outlived him. Thanks to our being able to bring you compilations such as this one, it will continue to do so for many years to come.

NOVO, U CELOFANU ORIGINAL STRANO IZDANJE DIGIPACK The RPM and Kent recordings of B.B. King have been comprehensively anthologised on Ace, particularly in the last couple of years with the expanded reissues of B.B.’s Crown albums of the 1950s and early 1960s. However, there are still several B.B. projects on the Ace agenda, and we kick off 2008 with the man’s first entry in the Hip Pocket series – a ‘straight from the original master tape’ reissue of the man’s 1967 Kent album, “The Jungle”. Of course, B.B. had left the Bihari brothers’ recording empire more than five years before an overdubbed version of the late 50s demo of The Jungle took him to #17 R&B / #94 Pop in the early summer of ’67. Its success merited the release of a full album, assembled from sessions that B.B. had cut mostly towards the end of his Kent tenure, and so it was that “The Jungle” also became the title of his first long player on Kent Records, eventually finding its way onto the various budget labels that were the Biharis’ main financial bread and butter during the late 60s and early 70s. As well as giving collectors a chance to enjoy the original sleeve, featuring a red-suited Arthur Adams – in profile – masquerading as the Blues Boy, it also gives us a change to hear a original Kent album exactly as it was first released, with alternate stereo mixes and overdubs – some of which are different to those on overdubbed versions released elsewhere – on otherwise familiar tracks. These alternate mixes have never been available on CD before now, making it a must-buy for the B.B. completist.

Baby Face - BUTCH STONE & HIS ORCHESTRA ‘Tis the season to be jolly once again, and that means its also time for another groovy gallop through the Modern Records archives in an attempt to bring you EVEN MORE MELLOW CATS AND KITTENS than we have already done on two previous volumes of fabulous, early west coast R&B. This, the third – and by no means final – instalment in the MC’N’K series once again draws on the early Modern acetates. In the label’s early days, Jules Bihari always recorded far more material than Modern could release, and anyone who has bought the previous two sets will agree that the quality of what Jules left on the shelf is little short of stunning. No less than 16 of this volume’s recordings have been confined to acetate for more than half a century, prior to their debut here. Every single one is as good as any master that actually was released at the time on Modern – and many are better. It’s great to be able to welcome back several old friends from earlier volumes. The remaining four tracks from Butch Stone’s small-but-perfectly-formed cache of repertoire will doubtless be among everyone’s favourites. Other returnees include the Three Bits Of Rhythm, Clarence Williams, Helen Humes and Scatman Crothers, represented by sides that pretty much sum up the sound of late 40s/early 50s Central Avenue R&B. Herb Fisher is featured on an early take of his Imperial 78 Ride, Ride, Ride – one of his best Modern sides and, curiously, one of only two that the Biharis chose not to issue. If you like the Amos Milburn/Floyd Dixon sound, you can add Herb to your list of ‘must hear’s’ right away. Also featured are artists who were essential players in the development of post-WWII R&B. You’ll know Jimmy Witherspoon, Johnny Otis and Hadda Brooks, but you may be less familiar with Big Jim Wynn or Felix Gross. You will certainly want to know more about both of these LA session stalwarts once you hear the previously unissued Stop – Skip Four Beats (Wynn) and Full House (Gross). Another amazing picker, the brilliant guitarist Mitchell “Tiny” Webb, can also be heard here to devastating effect on B Splat (one of Modern’s first releases) as a member of George “Happy” Johnson’s ‘sextette’ and, if anyone ever really manages to lift the veil of mystery that shrouds so many West Coast sessions, he’s probably on a good many of the other sides featured here. Modern’s earliest days are also handsomely represented by pioneering female vocalists like Numa Lee Davis, Estelle Edison and Pearl Traylor – none of whose careers extended far beyond their Modern sessions. Many of these ladies are accompanied by a tight little combo under the leadership of soon-to-be-seminal bebopper Howard McGhee. We also have a mystery lady on hand to Pitch A Boogie. All I can tell you for sure is that she isn’t “Sounders (sic) King” whose name is scrawled on the sleeve that houses her acetate. Even if snow isn’t going to be a-glistening in your lane, and whether or not you plan to deck your halls and don your gay apparel, the “Mellow Cats” series – and this volume in particular - offers a darn fine pick-me-up for any seasonal hangover blues that you may be experiencing soon. Have yourselves a Mellow little Christmas, Cats ‘n’ Kittens – and be aware that we’ll be doing it all over again with instalment # 4 in exactly twelve months time!

Whether it be drawn from Combo, Modern, Cash/Money/RIH or whatever, it`s always a pleasure to get stuck into the assembly of another great package of 40s/50s R&B and, as maybe Ace`s most currently-active A&R guy in this area (with respect to my equally-enthusiastic colleagues Broven, J., and Gibbon, P.), it`s fair to say that I get more pleasure out of doing so than most! Since I first came to Ace in September 2001, barely a week has gone by when I have not been working on some kind of vintage R&B package, and I hope that continues to be the case for a long time to come! Of course, where Modern especially is concerned, it`s a double delight to be able to work on anything from the company`s peak years. Currently I`m fine-tuning the long awaited second and final volume of Little Willie Littlefield, as well as two more Hadda Brooks sets that will all feature an impressive amount of previously unissued material. And its largely as a result of working on the latter sets that the project you`re reading about here and now came to fruition (as well as more than one potential follow up volume to it!). To make the Willie and Hadda projects as definitive as possible. I had requested the transference to DAT of all the hitherto-uncopied acetates by both artists. In the course of doing this, the guys at SML found that several of the acetates that were credited to Hadda, were actually by other artists like Butch Stone, the Three Bits Of Rhythm and Scatman Crothers. As it happens, I had been looking at introducing a Modern` line in Ace`s `Central Avenue` series for quite a while. The quality of the unissued and unreissued sides that SML were coming up with in the course of transferring Mr. Littlefield and Ms. Brooks` unheard works made it so much easier to do so, as you`ll hear! As with the previously released `Central Avenue Speakeasy`, `Mellow Cats And Kittens`, takes you straight to the heart of the West Coast`s Post-WWII Rhythm and Blues explosion, providing a window on a world that`s long since vanished and that we will never see the like of again, more`s the pity. The `cats and kittens` may themselves be mellow, but the music herein is usually anything but, as titles like `I Want To Rock `n` Roll`, `Good, Good Wine` and `Jake`s Boogie In D Flat` imply. This is about as good a representation of the sounds and styles you would encounter if you were a young black man or woman out for a night on L.A.`s famous Central Avenue anytime during the late 40s. Even though not everything here was recorded in Los Angeles, it all has that Central vibe and is all the better for having it. You may well find it incredible that only 5 of these takes have ever been released before. I, for one, most certainly did... However you take your R&B you`ll find much to enjoy here. The all-pervading influence of Louis Jordan can be heard in Butch Stone`s terrific recordings, and also in sides by Jake Porter, Bubber Cyphers and Scatman Crothers, while the cooler sounds of the King Cole Trio and the Three Blazers permeate the work of the Three Bits Of Rhythm and the trios of Herb Fisher and the endearingly-named Peter Rabbit. The emergence of the R&B vocal group is represented in early sides by the Robins and the Dick Lewis orchestra - the latter featuring the Barons, who included in their number the young Marvin Phillips of Marvin and Johnny/Jesse fame. The enormously popular `blues shouting` styles of Joe Turner and Wynonie Harris naturally get a look in, too, courtesy of T-99 and `Spoon respectively. We even feature a bit of unashamedly Californian small-group blues, via Tiny Webb. And it goes without saying that our litter of `kittens` all owes something to `The Queen` herself, HRH Dinah Washington. Across the board, this was pretty much what R&B was about back then, and these exceptional artists and recordings bring the Central scene to life so memorably that you will be able to smell the cigarette smoke and taste the whiskey as vividly as if you were seeing it all unfold in person... ...And, as stated earlier, there`s plenty more where this came from. This month`s Smokey Hogg CD release is both pertinent to, and part of, the whole West Coast R&B scene of the time, and another sizzlin` slab from the Central Avenue scene is on its way with the imminent release of `Central Rocks!`, our second multi-artist collection of Combo recordings, which will be out in November 2004 and which - like this one - will largely concentrate its efforts on the more uptempo side of post-WWII black music... ...Meanwhile, here`s enough full-cream R&B to satisfy the thirstiest - AND the mellowest! - cat or kitten. Too `Miaow`-vellous for words, and that`s a fact, Jack!

NOVO, U CELOFANU ORIGINAL STRANO IZDANJE The Bihari brothers didn’t go all that far out on a limb when they brainstormed the title of his encore album on their budget Crown subsidiary in June of 1958. What else would B.B. King proudly serve up for the LA label but THE BLUES? Like its Crown predecessor “Singin’ The Blues” (available on Ace CDCHM 1041 as part of the rollout of B.B.’s Crown LPs), “The Blues” collected a dozen gems from King’s singles back catalogue – here from RPM and Kent. Although it didn’t boast nearly the lineup of non-stop hits as King’s seminal debut album, there’s certainly no diminution in musical quality here. Nor were there any apparent concerns about the vintage of its selections. The set harked all the way back to B.B.’s legendary ‘51 session at the Memphis YMCA – the same fabled get-together that produced his first smash 3 O’Clock Blues - for its swinging flip That Ain’t The Way To Do It. ‘Boogie Woogie Woman’, a romping relic with Tampa Red roots also dating from King’s primordial Memphis tenure, sports Ike Turner’s rumbling 88s audaciously pushing B.B.’s hearty vocal (he contributed no audible guitar whatsoever to the sizzling track). The mournful Don’t Have To Cry was waxed in Houston circa 1952/53 with saxist Bill Harvey’s combo. It originally served as the opposite side of B.B.’s Latin-tempo winner Woke Up This Morning, which the Biharis included on King’s first LP. A pair of similarly saucy rhumba-tinged sides are aboard here, both of them bongo-laced. Don’t You Want A Man Like Me, was laid down at Capitol Studios in early ‘54 and features here minus the cowbell overdubs present on the RPM single. The following year’s playful Ruby Lee jauntily follows in its spicy footsteps. King never had any reservations about recycling blues gems of the past (Lowell Fulson’s 3 O’Clock Blues, Memphis Slim’s Every Day I Have The Blues, Big Joe Turner’s Sweet Sixteen, and the warhorse Rock Me Baby leap to mind). B.B.’s luxuriantly downbeat ‘54 hit When My Heart Beats Like A Hammer was another tried-and-true artifact, freely adapted from the first Sonny Boy Williamson’s Million Years Blues. Why Do Everything Happen To Me, King’s current single on Kent when this set hit the shelves, was yet another welcome revival, this time from the discography of Bay Area pianist and former labelmate Roy Hawkins (B.B. would memorably return to Roy’s songbook in 1969 for what’s endured as his eternal signature song, The Thrill Is Gone). The strutting You Know I Go For You was the coupling on the original Kent 45, and it’s sad testimony to the commercial demands of its rock‘n’roll-obsessed era that such a fine two-sider sank without trace. Tenor saxman par excellence Maxwell Davis came on the scene as Modern Records’ A&R boss mid-50s, about the same time most of the label’s illustrious blues roster was pink-slipped in favour of a new generation of rock‘n’rollers. Max’s arranging talents greatly enhanced B.B.’s RPM output, and his full-bodied sax challenged B.B.’s sweet Lucille for solo supremacy on quite a few mid-decade King tracks. Davis’ tight horn sections inevitably glided with assurance behind King, as What Can I Do and the single Troubles, Troubles, Troubles b/w I Want To Get Married underscore (the album version of the latter turns out to be a slightly different alternate from the single). The crackling-drums-followed-by-walking-bass combination that announces the rocking Early Every Morning was cadged from Elvis Presley’s then-current remake of Arthur Crudup’s My Baby Left Me, leading into the most aggressively driving number on the set and containing a load of blistering King guitar. Like all the other entries in this series, “The Blues” comes with rare bonus tracks. This Sweet Little Angel’ yet another chestnut that harked all the way back to Lucille Bogan’s Sweet Black Angel (B.B. was likely more familiar with postwar renditions by Tampa Red and Robert Nighthawk), is neither his ‘56 hit version done in Little Rock with his road band nor the slicker Davis-helmed L.A. rendition heard on “Singin’ The Blues”, but a nice alternate take of the latter. There are also two scorching up-tempo efforts from obscure RPM singles: Bye! Bye! Baby is a throwback with Harvey’s organization providing typical sure-handed backup, while I’m In Love is Maxwell Davis at his arranging best. The other three items are a story unto themselves. B.B. was ready to bolt the Biharis’ employ in May of ‘58 when he spent a few idle hours away from a Miami gig to knock off four sides for the perusal of none other than Leonard Chess. New Orleans bandleader/pianist Paul Gayten was in charge of the clandestine outing. B.B. was backed by his road band, and overall, it must be admitted that the results were a bit underwhelming. Yet Don’t Break Your Promise, Don’t Keep Me Waiting, and the trifling dance number Tickle Britches are invaluable from a historic standpoint. And they sure sound better here, right off the masters, than in the dubious copies that have occasionally made the rounds up to now. With compiler/annotator John Broven’s usual insightful notes, this tenth volume in Ace’s essential (and remastered) mid-price series of B.B.’s Crown LPs rates with his finest long-playing offerings for the label. This is truly the blues according to B.B. King.

Sock it to me Santa, ‘cause it’s time for the fourth instalment of the ongoing “Mellow Cats ‘N’ Kittens” series. As always, your scribe/compiler has spent a rewarding year toiling at the Modern acetate coalface, unearthing a stack of raw rockers and groovers that the studio wizards at Sound Mastering have polished into sparkling, ice cool diamonds for your dancing and listening pleasure. The time spent in assessing the results of the ongoing vault trawl has once again been well worthwhile, with many hitherto unknown or unissued goodies coming to light as a bi-product of the hours that have gone into researching them. You’ll re-encounter old friends from previous volumes, and make some new ones among the previously unissued and unknown artists. The breadth of repertoire ranges from the blasting, guitar-driven jump blues of the Felix Gross Orchestra to the cool, Charles Brown-influenced cocktail R&B of Billy Williams (not the Charioteers man), with stops along the way to take in Modern’s attempts to find their own Amos Milburn (Herb Fisher and the completely unknown Walter Smith) and Dinah Washington (Little Esther). Among other old friends we’re pleased to welcome back the Three Bits Of Rhythm, Pearl Traylor and Happy Johnson, all of whom return by genuine popular demand. And those who’ve taken us to task for failing to reissue the masters of certain tracks that we’ve previously issued alternates of will be delighted to know that the Roy Hawkins and Jimmy Witherspoon tracks featured here are indeed the master takes – both making their first appearance on an Ace CD for the first time. With comprehensive and enjoyable sleeve notes from Ace’s man on Central Avenue, Jim Dawson, and as many nice pix and label shots as we could stuff into a Santa-sized CD booklet, Volume Four is the perfect follow-on to what’s preceded it, Mellow Cats-wise. It’ll put plenty o’ cool in your Yule, that’s for sure – and there are only another 365 shopping days till the release of Volume Five, which I’m working on already.
