It was released on March 23, 1983, by Warner Bros. Records, and rose high on the charts in many countries. Four hit singles were released—`Gimme All Your Lovin`` which reached the American Top 40, `Sharp Dressed Man`, `TV Dinners` and their most successful single, `Legs`. Eliminator is ZZ Top`s most commercially successful release, with sales of 11 million and diamond certification in the US.[4] Since El Loco in 1981, the bandleader, Billy Gibbons, had been moving ZZ Top`s boogie and blues rock style towards the popular new wave style. For Eliminator, he increased the tempo and used more synthesizers and drum machines, producing a `tighter` album with a steady, driving beat.[1] The pre-production engineer Linden Hudson collaborated with Gibbons in Texas on the tempo and songs. The producer Bill Ham and the engineer Terry Manning joined Gibbons in Memphis, Tennessee, to edit the songs, replacing much of the contributions of bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. Ham claimed the album was solely the work of ZZ Top, but in 1986 Hudson won a lawsuit establishing himself as composer of the song `Thug`. Music videos for `Gimme All Your Lovin``, `Sharp Dressed Man` and `Legs` received regular rotation on MTV and helped ZZ Top gain popularity with a younger base. A customized 1933 Ford coupe, depicted on the album cover, appeared in the videos. Following Eliminator`s release, ZZ Top embarked on a worldwide concert tour. The video for `Legs` earned the band the MTV Video Music Award for Best Group. Rolling Stone named Eliminator number 398 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[5] It was listed at number 39 in The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s, and it was also included in Robert Dimery`s book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[6] A remastered version was released in 2008. Background In 1977, ZZ Top went on hiatus, weary of constant touring. Bandleader and guitarist Billy Gibbons traveled around Europe, and bassist Dusty Hill vacationed in Mexico; both grew their beards longer. Drummer Frank Beard checked into Palmer Drug Abuse Program, a Houston detox community, for his addiction to hard narcotics. To help finance Palmer, Beard organized a benefit concert and an album titled Freeway, working with engineers Steve Ames and Linden Hudson at Rampart Studios in Houston.[7] Returning to action and newly signed to Warner Bros. Records, ZZ Top recorded and released Degüello in 1979, certified Platinum in early 1980.[8] Getting clean in 1979, Beard bought a large house on the outskirts of Houston, in Quail Valley overlooking a golf course where he often played as a way to stay off drugs.[9][10] The band wanted to have a private rehearsal studio, so Beard invited Hudson to move in and supervise a recording studio in his home. Hudson designed the studio and oversaw its construction, centered on an isolation booth holding Beard`s drum kit, with more booths for guitar and bass amplifiers. Microphone signals ran through the mixing console and some outboard gear to the band`s semi-pro 1-inch 16-track Tascam tape recorder. ZZ Top used this studio in 1980 to work on material for their next album, El Loco, professionally recorded in Memphis and mixed by the band`s established engineer Terry Manning. Hudson played on several early song demos, including a synth line on `Groovy Little Hippie Pad` which was carried to Memphis on tape and mixed into the album by Manning. Hudson was not credited for this work but was promised future compensation.[11] Hudson also introduced Gibbons to drum machines during these rehearsals.[12] Gibbons later called Hudson `an influential associate... a gifted songwriter... He brought some elements to the forefront that helped reshape what ZZ Top were doing, starting in the studio and eventually to the live stage.`[10][13] From this point forward, the band was not able to reproduce certain songs in concert without using pre-recorded tracks.[10] The band carried a small tape player to each concert, with a technician hitting the `play` button to give Beard a click track cue in his headphones to start any song requiring such augmentation. Background In October 1982, the Genesis line-up of drummer/singer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and guitarist/bassist Mike Rutherford, with live drummer Chester Thompson and live guitarist Daryl Stuermer, wrapped their two-month tour of North America and Europe in support of the band`s third live album, Three Sides Live. They had also performed a one-off gig titled Six of the Best with original Genesis frontman and singer Peter Gabriel and former guitarist Steve Hackett to raise funds for Gabriel`s world music festival WOMAD after it ran into financial trouble. Genesis then entered a period of inactivity, during which the band pursued their solo projects. Writing and recording In the spring of 1983, the band reconvened at their studio, named The Farm in Chiddingfold, Surrey, to start work on a new studio album, their first since Abacab (1981). Genesis became their first album written, recorded, and mixed in its entirety at the studio room; previously they had to write in an adjoining space.[4][5] Having the group work in their own space without the additional pressure of booking studio time and fees resulted in a more relaxed environment.[5] They were joined by engineer Hugh Padgham, who had also worked on Abacab, but this time carried out production duties themselves with Geoff Callingham offering technical assistance.[4] Rutherford recalled an initial period of slow and sluggish progress, but after a particularly productive session on the third day they had `two or three` songs worked out, which increased their interest and excitement towards the album and in performing the new material on stage.[5] Before the sessions began, the group considered the idea of Banks or Rutherford taking on a lead vocal on the album, but opted out as they had developed material with Collins`s voice in mind. This time tracks came about through jamming and improvisations in the studio that were recorded onto tape,[5][8] ensuring the band remained unified and kept songs fresh.[5] Banks noted that this made recording more exciting and spontaneous.[8] This collaborative effort marked a return for Genesis crediting each member for writing the album as opposed to listing individual credits, which they had not done since The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974).[8] The collaborative effort also had an influence on the album`s title as the group were unable to come up with a suitable name, so they used Genesis to emphasise the fact that it was written collectively.[9] The main keyboards that Banks used on the album are the Prophet 10, Synclavier, an E-mu Emulator, a Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano, and an ARP Quadra on `Mama`.[7][8] At one point on the album, a sample from the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) is used. Collins said: `You play a chord and a half of it`s going at half the speed and part at twice the speed, sounds beautiful.`[10] Collins plays on a Simmons electronic drum kit.[11] Songs Genesis displays the group moving towards shorter, more straightforward, and radio friendly songs.
