The Dubliners were an Irish folk band founded in Dublin in 1962 as The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group after its founding member; they subsequently renamed themselves The Dubliners. The line-up saw many changes over their fifty-year career, but the group`s success was centred on lead singers Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew. The band garnered international success with their lively Irish folk songs, traditional street ballads and instrumentals.[1] The band were regulars on the folk scenes in both Dublin and London in the early 1960s, and were signed to the Major Minor label in 1965 after backing from Dominic Behan who was paid by Major-Minor to work with the Dubliners and help them to build a better act fit for larger concert hall venues. The Dubliners worked with Behan regularly between 1965 and 1966; Behan wrote numerous songs for this act including the song McAlpine`s Fusiliers created specifically to showcase Ronnie Drew`s gravel voice. They went on to receive extensive airplay on Radio Caroline which was part owned by Phil Solomon CEO of Major Minor, and eventually appeared on Top of the Pops in 1967 with hits `Seven Drunken Nights` (which sold over 250,000 copies in the UK)[2] and `The Black Velvet Band`. Often performing political songs considered controversial at the time, they drew criticism from some folk purists and Ireland`s national broadcaster RTÉ had placed an unofficial ban on their music from 1967 to 1971. During this time the band`s popularity began to spread across mainland Europe and they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in the United States. The group`s success remained steady right through the 1970s and a number of collaborations with The Pogues in 1987 saw them enter the UK Singles Chart on another two occasions.[3] The Dubliners were instrumental in popularising Irish folk music in Europe, though they did not quite attain the popularity of The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem in the United States. They influenced many generations of Irish bands, and their legacy can to this day be heard in the music of artists such as The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. Much adored in their native country, covers of Irish ballads by Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly tend to be regarded as definitive versions. One of the most influential Irish acts of the 20th century, they celebrated 50 years together in 2012, making them Ireland`s longest surviving musical act.[4][5] Also in 2012, the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards bestowed them with a Lifetime Achievement Award.[6] The Dubliners announced their retirement in the autumn of 2012, after 50 years of performing, following the death of original member Barney McKenna.[7] However, the surviving members of the group, continued touring under the name of `The Dublin Legends`. As of 2020, Seán Cannon is the only former member still in this group, following Eamonn Campbell`s death in October 2017.

IF YOU`RE NOT BACK IN LOVE BY MONDAY (ALTERNATE VOCAL MIX) - Millie Jackson 22. SKIP A ROPE - Joe Tex 23. SHE EVEN WOKE ME UP TO SAY GOODBYE - Brook Benton The line that separates the genres of country and soul music has never been a particularly thick one and over the decades there has been a healthy swapping of repertoire between the genres. Jimmie Rodgers, country music’s first superstar, established himself by putting a hillbilly spin on delta blues – and that was back in the late 1920s. Most 60s soul singers who grew up in the segregated American south in the 30s and 40s probably heard more country music on the radio than they did blues or jazz, as there was little to no radio programming devoted to music for black people. It’s therefore no surprise to find that there were so many classic adaptations of great country songs during the golden age of soul music. “Behind Closed Doors: Where Country Meets Soul” brings together 24 supreme spins on songs that were first recorded – usually successfully – by country artists. It’s not the first such compilation to do so but, if I say so myself, it’s the best one to date. As one who regards both genres to be of equal importance, and who collects both soul and country 45s, I can say with some certainly that nobody is going to be disappointed with the tracks in this top-notch compilation. (For those who might wish to check out the country originals after hearing them sung with soul, I have listed the first version of each song in the track-by-track annotations.) Where country meets soul can be a pessimistic and dark place. Songs such as ‘The Grand Tour’ or ‘Life Turned Her That Way’ are going to have a downbeat outlook whoever is singing them; they are as tailor-made for Aaron Neville and James Carr as they are for those who originally sang them for country audiences (George Jones and Little Jimmy Dickens), while Percy Sledge sings ‘Take Time To Know Her’ with the experience of someone who sounds like he lived every minute of its bleak narrative and provides this collection with an undisputed highlight. The place can also be optimistic and light, as Joe Simon’s wonderful version of the early Waylon Jennings hit ‘Yours, Love’ and Little Milton’s romping revamp of Charlie Rich’s ‘Behind Closed Doors’ show. Somewhere in the middle there’s Moses & Joshua Dillard’s tear ’em up take on ‘My Elusive Dreams’, a song usually sung in country circles in the maudlin manner of the original version by its writer Claude “Curly” Putnam. There are still a few people out there who have not yet come to regard soul and country as musical equals. Hopefully “Behind Closed Doors: Where Country Meets Soul” will help to right that wrong and lead to further understanding of why so many country songs have been turned into soul classics down the years.

THE VAMPIRE - Orvin Yoes Gore blimey, Boris, what manner of beast is this? True to its Mission Statement of bringing great music back from the dead, the House of Wax that is forever Ace Records has (temporarily) nipped over to the dark side, to disinter more than two dozen monstrous goodies (and one or two baddies) from rock`n`roll`s overflowing Vault of Horror. Ace`s resident Scaredy Cats, Tony `Mummy`s Boy` Rounce and Rob `Gratefully Undead` Finnis have been for a little walk through music`s graveyard, trying to keep the dark forces at bay while they toiled to create a monster that is as ghastly as you`d hope any CD entitled `These Ghoulish Things` could ever be. Working overtime on the graveyard shift we`ve unearthed more than two dozen mouldering oldies, assembling the finished CD from only the finest `spare parts` and working at a pace that can truthfully be described as `frightening`. The delights that your gruesome twosome have dug up include a number of tracks that have lain undisturbed in Rock`n`Roll`s Vault Of Horror since their first appearances on vinyl in the 1950s or early 60s. These tracks include Billy De Marco and Count Dracula`s Drac`s Back which, it is alleged, had to be recorded at night, due to the ongoing unavailability of one of its vocalists during daylight hours and Orvin Yoes` staggeringly inept The Vampire, which sounds as though it actually might have been recorded from the inside of a coffin with the lid nailed down, and for which `amateurish` might probably be too kind a description. But before you start thinking that this is just another heap of musical body parts, randomly cobbled together to form any old monster (mish-) mash, we`d like to assure you that this really is a creation of a quality that any top notch mad scientist would be proud to call his own. This CD`s Theatre Of Blood or `bloooerghhhhh`, as Allan Sherman`s My Son, The Vampire would have it presents a horror show that`s drawn almost exclusively from rock`n`roll`s Ghoul-den age, its time span approximately matching the mid-late 50s peak of popularity for scary movies, and dovetailing with the latter`s impact on post WWII teenage America. With teens being scared out of their wits at drive-in movie theatres all across the USA, it was only natural that horror would quickly work its way into rock`n`roll. How much it did so is reflected unless you`re a crazy, mixed-up Transylvanian, in which case nothing is reflected, of course in the number of doo woppers who cut songs that related to the genre. At least 25% of the inclusions here are vocal group records, many by immortal names like the Hollywood Flames and the Jayhawks. Their cuts here, as well as those of many others that we`ve disinterred from the Vault Of Horror, have first class reputations that their `novelty value` does nothing to besmirch. Likewise, big bad Bo Diddley`s meeting with an unspecified monster is just as compelling as any of his marginally less horrific encounters with the Chess brothers. Other notable rockers from the locker here include die-hard Memphis rockabilly-cum-bluesman Billy Lee Riley, who has brought along a plateful of Nightmare Mash for your delectation (goes down very well with a little spot of congealed blood, we find. We`re also pleased to welcome some other larger than life-or-death personalities to our Screamin` Ball At Dracula Hall, both of whom are well known world wide for their ability to spin a scary story or two. That`s Philadelphia`s John `Dinner With Drac` Zacherle over there in the foyer drinkin` blood (spo-dee-o-dee) with the great Jalacy `Screamin` Jay` Hawkins, whose original version of his classic Feast Of The Mau Mau is, quite frankly, a howl from start to finish. In the true spirit of Halloween, every major monster of the big or small screen gets a look in. From TV land we`ve invited the Munsters and the Addams Family, dressed in their best funeral clothes and ready to do The Voo Doo Walk with The Creature From Outer Space, The Wolfman and The Mummy (be careful not to step on the latter`s loose bandages, Daddy-O), and if he can find his way over from Sleepy Hollow without his head Ichabod Crane. (If you lust for a vampire, you`ll also find plenty to sink your teeth into here thanks to Allan Sherman, the Duponts and the aforementioned Mr Yoes.) Those who can`t get into this Monster Party will be found close to hand, Rockin` In The Graveyard with Jackie Morningstar or maybe just taking a Midnight Stroll with the Revels. Try to join our party if you can: Dr Frankenstein assures us it`s going to be really `alive! ALIVE!!` And when the CD`s over, be sure to catch the Ghost Train leaving from track 5, where Virgil Holmes is ready to get you back to the Old Dark House in time for a glass of gin (it`s our only weakness) and hibernation `til the following night. We`d love to tell you more, but it`s getting close to midnight and frankly we know what happens once the clock strikes twelve, and we don`t want to stick around to witness it for ourselves. `Fire bad!` `Friend good!!` `These Ghoulish Things even better still!!!` It`s your funeral if you don`t dig it.

NOVO, U CELOFANU ORIGINAL STRANO IZDANJE Although Millie Jackson’s sassy big city image suggests otherwise, she’s a country gal. Born in rural Georgia, Millie grew up listening to country music as there were no R&B stations in the area. It was only when she moved to New Jersey as a teenager that she had the chance to regularly hear anything else. Almost every album Millie made between 1975 and 1981 contained at least one country song. In 1977 she reached #5 on the Soul chart with ‘If You’re Not Back in Love By Monday’, a big hit for its writer Merle Haggard earlier that year. Millie also turned Kenny Rogers’ groundbreaking ‘Sweet Music Man’ into a Top 40 Soul hit in 1978. In 1980 Millie cut an album that lived up to its title of “Just A Li’l Bit Country” but the record did not receive the promotion it deserved due to personnel changes at her record company. Millie regards it as something of a “lost album” and is pleased we are able to include several of its tracks in this new collection of her Soul Country material. The sweep ranges from 1950s classics such as Don Gibson’s ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ and Charlie Walker’s ‘Pick Me Up On Your Way Down’ to songs that were nearly new when Millie put her stamp on them – Dolly Parton’s ‘Here You Come Again’ and her duet with Isaac Hayes on Anne Murray’s ‘You Needed Me’ (both Country chart-toppers) being two examples. Millie always picked her own material, usually in conjunction with producer Brad Shapiro. She chose all the songs here because she liked them and frequently liked the singers who sang them originally. ‘Black Bitch Crazy’, Millie’s makeover of Tyler Farr’s recent Country chart-topper ‘Redneck Crazy’ – created especially for this album and her first new recording in 10 years – shows she can still interpret a country song in a compelling and contemporary way. Millie cut it this year after hearing Farr’s record on the radio and identifying with its message. It’s as good as anything she recorded at the peak of her chart popularity and is a more than welcome addition to her discography. They say “you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl”. The selection of songs and performances here show just how true that is in Millie Jackson’s case.

NOVO, U CELOFANU ORIGINAL STRANO IZDANJE Little Richard is one of the very few artists who can really claim to have defined rock’n’roll and influenced a whole generation of eager young musicians all around the globe. Recording for Specialty in the famed Cosimo Matassa’s studio in New Orleans, he issued a string of 13 singles between 1955 and 1959 that set the world alight. Despite many white-owned radio stations being hostile to his music, and having to endure watered-down covers of his songs by artists such as Pat Boone, his music proved to be so powerful that his versions were what everyone eventually realised they had to have. Little Richard’s success was not overnight. Well before linking up with Specialty, he worked around a wide variety of venues on the chitlin’ circuit. Especially influenced by blues singer Billy Wright, he made some recordings for RCA in 1952 and the Peacock label the following year. He took to the road with his band, wowing club audiences with his earlier, much more suggestive version of ‘Tutti-Frutti’. His first contact with Specialty and their producer Bumps Blackwell led to some recordings of blues and gospel numbers. Blackwell eventually asked him to try some more up-tempo material; ‘Tutti-Frutti’ was unleashed, setting the tone for the run of hits to follow. From the outset at Specialty, Richard sold strongly, with most of his singles going Top 3 R&B and many also making the upper reaches of the pop charts. ‘Long Tall Sally’ and ‘Keep A Knockin’’ peaked at #6 and #8 respectively in 1956 and 1957. ‘Long Tall Sally’ became one of his biggest UK hits, reaching #3. Richard also landed a starring spot in what many consider the best rock film ever made, The Girl Can’t Help It, where many thousands probably got their first sight of him. The collection also features Richard’s versions of some songs originally popularised by others – ‘I’ll Never Let You Go’, ‘Baby Face’ and ‘By The Light Of The Silvery Moon’ – while his 1964 recording ‘Bama Lama, Bama Loo’ finds him in no-holds-barred 50s territory, but without the driving saxes. With notes from Richard’s biographer Charles “Dr Rock” White, this is a winning package in every sense.

Made in the EU. Nov cd, u celofanu. Label: Food – 5099994127225, EMI – 5099994127225 Format: CD, Album Country: Europe Released: 2012 Genre: Electronic, Rock Style: Alternative Rock, Synth-pop, Indie Rock Doubt is the second album by British rock band Jesus Jones, released on 21 January 1991 through Food Records. The label witnessed the success of their debut album Liquidizer (1989) and wanted more hit-sounding music from the band. Frontman Mike Edwards wrote new material on their tour bus and in hotel rooms; they recorded some of it in early 1990, before touring resumed. After the conclusion of a tour of the United Kingdom, the band spent a week in May 1990 recording the bulk of their next album at Matrix Studios in London. Edwards produced the majority of the tracks, with Food Records co-founder Andy Ross and Martyn Phillips producing one song each. Doubt is a techno-rock album that refines the sample-heavy approach of Liquidizer. During the making of it, they listened to music from the likes of the KLF, Janet Jackson and Mel and Kim. Edwards, who had been consuming a large amount of popular music wanted it be a reaction to Liquidizer, exploring the influence of dance music had over rock. His lyrics had been compared to that of the Kinks frontmant Ray Davies, while the album`s psychedelia overtones evoked the Beatles` late 1960s period and contemporary baggy acts the Charlatans and Happy Mondays. `Real, Real, Real` was released the lead single from Doubt in March 1990; over the next few months, Jesus Jones performed at various festivals, before embarking on their first tour of North America in September 1990. That same month, `Right Here, Right Now` was released as the second single from the album, which was later promoted with a UK tour. The track would be released in the United States in December 1990, while `International Bright Young Thing` became the third single from Double that same month. Following an appearance at the Great British Music Weekend, `Who? Where? Why?` was released as the album`s fourth single in February 1991. The band promoted it with tours of the UK and US; MTV would help to give the band a boost in popularity in the latter territory. Doubt received generally positive reviews about the songwriting, though some critics were less enthusiastic about it. It reached number 25 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the UK Albums Chart, and later certified platinum in the US. `Real, Real, Real`, `Right Here, Right Now`, `International Bright Young Thing` and `Who? Where? Why?` all reached the top 40 in the UK, with `International Bright Young Thing` charting the highest at number seven. In the US, `Real, Real, Real` and `Right Here, Right Now` peaked at number four and two on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Toledo Blade included it on their list of the year`s best releases; it and `Right Here, Right Now` would be nominated for Grammy Awards. The song earned an award from the BMI and PRS for being the most played track at college radio.

NOVO, U CELOFANU ORIGINAL STRANO IZDANJE Elusive Butterfly: The Complete Jack Nitzsche Sessions Bob Lind’s 1966 work achieves the all too rare accolade of sounding just as fresh today as it did back then, when his work stood head-and-shoulders above his contemporaries and evoked feelings of wonder and delight. What was it then that marked him out as something very different? Straight away we can point to Jack Nitzsche’s arrangements on those first two albums, “Don’t Be Concerned” and “Photographs Of Feeling”, that wrapped his songs in a warm and protective cloak of acoustic guitars and distant soaring strings, but it was Bob’s songs that really attracted attention. His lyrical world was one of the outdoors, of wistful contemplation of life and love; his view was that of a poet. Today we might say he wasn’t afraid to let his feminine side show. Elusive Butterfly was the big hit, but there were so many more that could have given him the breakthrough hit: Mr Zero, Truly Julie’s Blues, Cheryl’s Going Home and Dale Ann were all from the first album (1966) that caught both the ear of the public and the recording industry. He rapidly became top ‘must-cover’ choice and artists as varied as Keith Relf, Val Doonican and Gary Usher’s Hondells recorded his songs. Lind had grown up in Denver where, after the obligatory rock group time (Bob Lind and The Misfits), he linked into the local folk scene that had produced Judy Collins. Realising that he had to look beyond the Denver horizon, he went to Los Angeles by way of San Fransisco and got a deal with Liberty’s subsidiary World Pacific, where his songs quickly attracted attention from locals such as the Turtles and Cher. Meeting Jack Nitzsche was the icing on the cake, as the pair got on so well that Jack invited Bob to stay at his home until he found better acccomodation. Nitzsche’s bold use of strings on the first album really marked out the arrangements and production, giving the work an almost ethereal quality rather than the usual sweetening, and pre-figuring Jack’s slightly later work with Buffalo Springfield. Elusive Butterfly began life as the B-side of Cheryl’s Going Home, but was soon flipped by radio DJs. Lind’s career was launched, and his second LP contained the equally strong follow-up single Remember The Rain, which also charted, as did its flip, Truly Julie’s Blues (I’ll Be There). Ace Records are proud to make these first two complete albums available again - and, unlike any previous reissues of this material, the mastering comes directly from the original World Pacific stereo production tapes. As a bonus there are also two solo, 1965 demo versions of songs that Lind never recorded commercially. Bob Lind recently issued his first album in over 35 years, and he’s playing his first ever UK show at London’s Luminaire on 15 June. His celebrity fans include Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker, both of whom are seeking to work with Lind, so this look at his essential early work could not have been better timed by Ace.

I WAS WRONG - Harold Burrage 25. A FOOL FOR HIDING MY LOVE FROM YOU - Harold Burrage Richard Stamz was a colourful R&B and soul DJ who operated in Chicago throughout the 50s and 60s. A slick, jive talker who hosted a groundbreaking black TV show in the city in 1956, his on-air persona ran from crown prince to royal highness. Around 1960 he took over the Cobra/Artistic/Abco studio and the Paso label, which he continued to run alongside his own Foxy operation. Bluesman Harold Burrage was already at Paso; he and Stamz began working closely together, with Burrage recording, composing songs, playing sessions and even voicing ads for Stamz’s radio show. Burrage’s 45s for Paso and Foxy are superb examples of early 60s blues as it moved towards soul. His extremely rare original version of Betty Everett’s ‘Please Love Me’ will be of great interest to new breed R&B fans, as will many of the tracks on these largely uncharted labels. Blues fans will be thrilled by the presence of some of Howlin’ Wolf’s sidemen in the Willie Williams band, including guitarist Hubert Sumlin; the outfit provides three previously unreleased blues instrumentals. Influential guitarist Freddy Robinson appears as a session-man on many tracks. His own 45 from the Queen label is also included, one side in an alternate take. Tough-voiced blues singers Mary Johnson and Flora D provide excellent R&B sides that complement the male contenders from Burrage, Lee “Shot” Williams and Detroit Jr. The uptempo decks of these discs are avidly hunted by new breed collectors. The Ideals and Ze-Majestics represent the vocal group side with R&B-flavoured numbers. The other previously unheard masters include a good R&B dance tempo song from Tony Gideon of the Daylighters, a jazz-influenced groover from Loretta Branch and the rare and mysterious Robert & The Rockin’ Robins singing about ‘Romeo Joe’. Musicologists Richard Shurman and Patrick Roberts, the author of a book on Richard Stamz’s life, provide fascinating musical and entertaining sociological facts about the recordings and the man. Stamz’s daughter Phyllis has given the compilers and writers access to the family’s memorabilia which illustrates the package, providing a taster of Chicago musical life at the dawn of the 60s.
