Odašiljač na radio-stanici ima dugačku antenu kojom šalje radio-talase slušaocima udaljenim mnogo kilometara. Radio svakog slušaoca ima svoju, manju antenu u obliku pruta ili komada žice. Stanica u svim pravcima šalje signale radio-talasa, koje može da uhvati antena bilo kog radija koji im se nađe na putu. Stanice emituju svoje programe ili pomoću AM (modulacija amplitude) ili pomoću FM (modulacija frekvencije) talasa. AM talas, koji je duži od FM talasa, može imati 91 metar od jednog do drugog vrha talasa. Za razliku od AM talasa, FM talasi mogu imati od jedne trećine metra do jednog metra od jednog do drugog vrha talasa. Bilo da su u pitanju AM ili FM talasi, radio funkcioniše na isti način. Njihovi elektroni počinju da vibriraju po obrascu električnog signala. Elektroni počinju da odašilju nevidljivu svetlost, tj. radio-talase, koji se iz antene šire u nebo. Pošto elektroni iz antene vibriraju prema posebnom obrascu koji stvara glas, u radio-talase koji se emituju takođe je utisnut taj obrazac. Kada radio-talasi stignu do antene na radiju, ponovo se pretvaraju u električni signal – zvučni signal plus noseći signal. Radio-prijemnik automatski razdvaja zvučni i noseći signal. Ono što je spojeno u radio-stanici razdvaja se u radiju, koji zatim ubacuje zvučni signal u zvučnik. Zvučnik ima ulogu mikrofona, samo što radi u suprotnom smeru – vraća električnom zvučnom signalu oblik zvučnih talasa. I tako se na radiju čuje glas voditelja (ili muzika).
