All the speaker switches are configured so that if you use 8 Ω speakers the minimum impedance seen by the amplifier will be 4 Ω What are the benefits of series vs parallel ? The switches which have more than two sets of speakers use a combination of series and parallel switching to achieve the minimum impedance of 4 Ω no matter what combination of speakers are switched on. For the two way switches there is a choice between exclusively series or parallel versions. If you have 8 Ω speakers (and a 4 Ω min amp) you should always use the parallel switch. If you have 4 Ω speakers and a 4 Ω min amp you should always use the series switch. All QED switches load on 4 Ω using 8 Ω speakers. What happens if my speakers are 6 Ω? 1. Check your amp - if it can cope with a 3 Ω load or less (and some can) then you are alright. The rule is you must always use speakers with double the impedance of the amp minimum. 2. If you only have two pairs of speakers then use the two way SERIES switch. How do the switches deal with power, e.g. if I have an amplifier with more than 150 watts? These accessories use mains switches which are rated at 6A which means the max power they can handle is 288W given an 8 Ω load If my amp is rated 6-16 Ω should I really be running a 4 Ω load? NO, NEVER - you should use 12 Ω minimum speakers. You can get 16 Ω speakers though - but it may just be easier to change the amp. Can I use them in reverse e.g. as an amplifier switcher (we know the answer is no, but why?) NO - because the speaker switches are designed to have two sets or more of speakers attached to one amp, if used in reverse there is always the possibility of connecting two amps at once to one pair of speakers resulting in damage to one or both amps. What is the technical definition of 'transmatch'? For the 5 way speaker switch we don't use parallel or series switching but use transformer coupling instead. Again you have to use 8 Ω speakers minimum if your amp is a 4 Ω minimum amp. The impedance is then matched by the transformer (hence the name) so that a net 1.6 Ω load (all 5 sets of 8 Ω speakers switched on)is converted back to a 4 Ω load. One pair of speakers (A) is not connected to the transformer but is directly connected to the amp, these will be the main speakers. The four B pairs are connected via the transformer.

A2 TECHNOLOGY The A2 continues the success of our fully mechanical automatic turntables. With the A2, you can now select the drop off point for 7“ (singles) or 12“ (LPs) for 45 RPM records. We have also added 78 RPM to the system allowing you to dig back into old shellac collections. To enjoy listening to your A2, just press start and the tonearm automatically moves to the lead in groove of the record. Once playing, the automatics are completely taken out of the equation. And because the automatics are working entirely mechanically – no additional electronics needed – they truly do not influence or degrade sound quality during playback! At the end of the record, the tonearm is automatically brought back and gently lowered into its resting position and the motor shut off. Why sub-chassis? Automatic turntables have many small mechanical parts, which means you need more hollow space in the chassis to fit them. Hollow spaces are the biggest problem as they always reinforce resonances. By using a sub-chassis, you decouple the tonearm and drive from the chassis. In other words, a sub-chassis is a MUST for automatic turntables and enables them to reach excellent sound performance. Floating sub-chassis The A2 employs a sub-chassis construction, where the tonearm, platter bearing and motor are mounted onto a separate floating sub-chassis. This isolates all the most critical turntable elements further and adds an extra layer of protection against outside noise, resonances and interference. This has especially big advantages, when your loudspeakers are very close to the turntable. Pro-Ject Design Philosophy Adding Pro-Ject designs and ideas, we have spent a lot of time on the A2‘s clean design language. You will see similarities to iconic designs of the German audio industry. Today, we believe that this minimalistic approach is very much modern again. IMPROVED AUTOMATIC MECHANISM We have invested in a new aluminium diecast top for the whole sub-chassis and automatic mechanism. We have tried to avoid plastic parts from the original German automatic design as much as possible. This is the first time in all the 50 years of its existance that the original automatic design has received an improvement like this. Due to the new aluminium diecast cover and the massive chassis, the whole sub-chassis construction is more effective and isolates unwanted resonance much better. MASSLESS TRACKING FORCE ADJUSTMENT The A2 uses a new system for setting the tracking force. As usual, you first level out the tonearm with the damped counterweight. Damping the counter- weight makes the tonearm as a whole more robust and decouples the counterweight from the tonearm reducing resonant frequencies. Afterwards the tracking force is set by turning a dial directly on the tonearm bearing. Not only is this system very fast, precise and efficient, it also keeps the center of gravity directly on top of the bearing center. The spring based anti-skating can also be adjusted directly on the tonearm base. IMPROVED TONEARM & CARDANIC BEARING The A2 features an 8.3” ultra-light-mass aluminium tonearm with an improved tonearm tube with bigger diameter. The is a perfect match for the slightly heavier Ortofon 2M Red. In combination we retain the super fast response and all transient detail with lots of fine microdynamics, while the new 2M Red adds a lot of body and musical warmth. The tonearm bearing has received a major upgrade, is now made out of aluminium and features a 4-pin-point cardanic construction with steel tip ball bearings from our own production. This allows for unhindered and free tonearm movement with the lowest amount of friction possible. The A2 will track your vinyl records with the utmost of precision and tightness. WHY ULTRA-LIGHT-MASS TONEARM? Since forever, there has been this technical discussion about light-weight tonearms with high compliance MM cartridges vs. heavy tonearms with low compliance MC cartridges. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages and you‘ll find detailed analysis in concerned literature. However, when it comes to automatic turntables, we NEED ultra-light-mass tonearms. There is no way around it. We need the automatic mechanics to be like those in mechanical watches: small and precise. A heavy tonearm would result in a rougher mechanical design as much higher masses have to be moved. Therefore, the A2 reaches performance hights like no other automatic turntable on the market. Streamlined control Once you’ve selected a template, Lurssen Mastering Console presents you with three easy to use controls that let you adjust the master to your taste. Just like in Gavin’s studio, you can adjust a linked Input Drive, adjust a five band EQ and also use a special “PUSH” knob. The PUSH knob is particularly important because it lets you subtly and uniformly nudge the EQs so you can “ride” the flow of the song and highlight parts, adding that special Lurssen magic to your masters. You also get two VU meters, a master bypass switch (quite handy for hearing your work versus the original file) and a STEREO/MONO monitoring switch. You can record the real-time adjustments to the two master knobs via the automation feature so you can really dig into the nitty gritty of your master and record your work for later. Lurssen Mastering Console lets you see your audio thanks to this handy waveform display. You can loop audio here, view and edit automation data and move freely through your chosen song. Styles and control Lurssen Mastering Console has been designed to sound great without any tweaking required on your part. That being said, you can view and alter some of the settings of Gavin’s processing chain thanks to the Chain view screen. Here you can view the individual components that comprise each Style template and make adjustments to things like gain reduction on specific pieces of gear. You can save your changes to the Style templates as presets, which can also store different EQ settings. Mono, stereo and surround The Lurssen Mastering Console plugin can be inserted in mono, stereo, multi-channel tracks and buses in any compatible DAW, for ultimate flexibility and usability as both mastering and mixing tool. The mono operation not only allows you to use the plugin on simple mono tracks (such as vocals, bass, guitars etc.) in regular mixing sessions, or stereo buses for stem mixing or mastering duties, but it can also be used on 5.1 surround or even greater projects, depending on the selected DAW. The parameters, presets and Styles will remain consistent across all instances on a multichannel bus when settings are linked. This will allow more precision and coherency over surround operation. Powerful processing and effortless export As with mixing, mastering is about ensuring that your audio sounds as good as possible on as many playback devices as possible. Lurssen Mastering Console allows for an extreme degree of sonic detail thanks to its 88.2/96kHz DSP processing. Finished audio rendered with Lurssen Mastering Console sounds great in any format. It allows for export to all popular file formats from AAC to WAV, FLAC and beyond. Projects in Lurssen Mastering Console for Mac and PC are compatible with Lurssen Mastering for iPhone/iPad. That means that if you have both applications, you can transfer your projects and use the iPhone/iPad version to hear how your work sounds on a variety of different output devices (you can also use the iPhone/iPad version to finish projects and vice versa). With Lurssen Mastering Console, musicians finally have a way to achieve professional-quality audio mastering results any time and everywhere they go. Digital Delivery Mastering “Mastered for iTunes” If you are mastering your music for digital distribution and streaming services like iTunes®, Pandora® and Spotify®, Lurssen Mastering Console can ensure your music gets heard. Lurssen Mastering Console has a new Digital Delivery Mastering feature that provides you with mastered audio files that comply with Apple’s “Mastered for iTunes” specifications for sample rate, bit depth and peak levels, ensuring that your audio translates perfectly for compressed formats like AAC. Digital distribution and streaming services have become the current de-facto standard of music delivery to consumers, and engineers have started to put more care into the production of the final master to ensure that the quality of the audio, when compressed to AAC or other formats, is as close as possible to the original source file. For this reason Apple has developed a set of best practices and tools that should be used for compliance to what has been labeled as “Mastered for iTunes®”. Technically, files have to comply with high-resolution sample rate and bit depth requirements, but the most important aspect is peak level. As the tendency in contemporary digital music production is to go for super loud masters, distortion is created as a by-product of extreme use of digital peak limiters pushing up the level. Even though the file’s maximum peak level is not exceeding 0.0 dBFS, digital overshoots will still occur when the file is de-compressed back to PCM format for playback. Apple’s Mastered for iTunes® criteria states that no clipping at or over 0.0dBFS should be present in the digital master to be submitted. When checked with Apple’s tools specifically made for this purpose, masters with digital overs may be rejected. This is where the new Digital Delivery Mastering option for Lurssen Mastering Console comes in. It offers an additional layer of protection against peak overshoots that could be generated by the AAC compression and decompression process. This can cause clips that may go unnoticed while mixing and mastering with regular sample peak meters. This is achieved by the peak limiter at the end of the mastering chain working in a specific way. This guarantees that the compressed file is safe from distortion when played back from digital distribution services such as Apple’s iTunes®, Spotify and Pandora. The Digital Delivery Mastering option is part of the HD Engine in-app purchase, and can be enabled independently from the HD Engine in the settings menu. It is also included in the free update for Mac/PC users. Note: Please be aware that under certain extreme circumstances such as an unbalanced high frequency content of the audio file or an overly loud and distorted master due to an improper use of the application’s gain staging could make for digital overshoots that may not be avoided by the DDM algorithm.
