Alexander Knox - Night Of The White Bear Pan, 1973 253 str. meki povez stanje: dobro Novel of a young Eskimo who has been living cut off from his own people, at an American base in northern Canada. He runs away to discover `the old ways`. ...moving with surety and suspense from a frightening Arctic odyssey of the hunter and the hunted into a steamy igloo which turns from an area of human sexual pleasure to one of jealous rage. This ambitious novel never fills the many destinies its author sets for it. The theme purports to be primitive innocence confounded and corrupted by encroaching civilization. But it`s really an ice bound odyssey set in the Arctic with labyrinthian twists following the journey of Uglik (a young Eskimo boy who is escaping from an American Army station where he has been, more or less, forced into homosexuality) as he searches for his people and the idyll of the old ways. Along the way he joins up with two of his people, old Joe and his young wife Patki. During a long storm they share Patki in an unabashed relationship marred by Joe`s peculiar sexual deformity. The relationship steadily deteriorates with Joe`s wild temper tantrums and an accident that leaves them almost defenseless against a white bear that seems to be deliberately stalking them. Eventually trapped, it is up to Uglik to destroy the bear and prove his manhood. The author`s portraits of survival in the snowy wilds are effectively drawn -- but his preoccupation with the perversities of human nature overwhelm the landscape.
