Detalji predmeta Stanje Polovno Abstract Reviews the book, Inventing motherhood, the consequences of an ideal by Ann Dally (1983). In this book, the author argues that the concept of motherhood which is prevalent today has evolved gradually over centuries. She refers particularly to views which focus on the intimacy of the mother-child relationship as crucial for the child's future psychological health. In Section I, entitled "Changing Motherhood," Dally presents a historical perspective, citing increased survival of children and parents as an important determinant that has fostered the development of deeper personal attachments. In the second section of the book, entitled "The Crisis of Motherhood," Dally negates the concept of a maternal "instinct." She emphasizes learning and socialization, and she focuses on maternal power, particularly the power that mothers have over their children. The last several chapters in this book, which look at some current dilemmas, focus on the role of men with children. The author also discusses day care and attends to its political use. The author concludes the book with some practical suggestions and clear statements about the need for an expanded view of sex roles, families, and particularly the role of government with regard to social phenomena and societal needs. This book can be frustrating when the author is moralistic, or when historical data lose their context and the reader is not sure which era or which side of the Atlantic is being considered. The book is, however, an interesting and worthwhile volume that provides a wealth of information and an important perspective for anyone interested in families. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) Mothers have always existed but "motherhood" is a comparatively recent invention. The economic and social developments which, over the past two hundred years, divorced the place of work from the home, separated the elderly from the working population, and virtually abolished the domestic servant, have resulted in a family consisting, for most of the working hours, if not all the time, of the mother and her children. In the first part of her book Ann Dally shows how this trend has run paralled with changes in the theory and practice of mothering which have emphasized the importance and exclusiveness of the mother-child relationship and have idealized it at the expense of the older, wider relationships with family and community.
