With Devialet's 210 Pro Dual from the latest and comprehensively optimized "Expert" series, one of the first things to notice is the very user-friendly operation. As usual for Devialet amps, the key specifications of the two flat, dark chrome-plated devices are stored on one SD card each, which is inserted in a slot on the rear and can be reprogrammed for a wide range of options via the homepage of the French specialist with relative ease. At the next start, the amps, which by the way hardly reach half the normal hi-fi height even when placed on top of each other, take over the updated configuration. Hugely flexible! Master & Companion If you buy the Expert 210 Pro Dual, which comes in two boxes, the Dual is preset so that one amp takes over the "master" function while the other works as a "companion". A briefly appearing note in the circular display when switching on – which in this chip-based concept is more like a "boot up" – provides information about the distribution of roles. Since the entire signal processing is digital, the amplifiers are connected by means of a coaxial digital cable via one RCA socket each. If you now turn the large volume knob on the simply ingenious remote control, you can watch the decibel level values moving up and down at the exact same time on both devices. All other functions like for example the temperature display, are equally perfectly synchronized. All source devices – whether digital or analogue – must be connected exclusively to the master device. The companion becomes a pure power amplifier. As is usual for stereo amplifiers, which are converted to mono-blocks, the speaker cables are connected to the two "hot" positive leads. This "floating" setup without ground reference is probably responsible for the majority of the superior performance independent of volume in mono operation. By the way, every owner of a Devialet amp can switch to double mono by purchasing an identical model. The 210 Pro Dual is made up of two 140 Pros – it's all just a matter of configuration. There is however no real quantity discount: if you decide on the Dual set for 9,900 Euros right from the start, you save just 80 Euro. The fact that Devialet amps, whether stereo or mono, are aimed at the digital generation and new media is not only illustrated by the multitude of possibilities in this sector like UPNP streaming via Ethernet, high-bit-capacity "AIR" WLAN, USB interface and one coaxial and two optical digital inputs. Devialet's Expert Pro-amps are even "Roon ready" and thus open up a whole media cosmos including important streaming services to their owners. In addition, the "Roon" app ran perfectly smoothly with our setup. It's almost a sin to only briefly touch on the unique and diverse technical and equipment highlights of the 210 Pro Dual. However, for a more in-depth exploration, we would need much more space, and the excellent website provides comprehensive information anyway. That's why "SAM" should be mentioned here above all. Via "Speaker Active Matching" the amplifier compensates for errors of many speaker models in both frequency and phase range. Currently 984 loudspeaker models are included. These were successively measured individually, and the correction curves can be downloaded to the SD card. The next time the amp is started, it will know what to do. The improvements range from subtle to monumental, depending on the quality of the speaker. The 210 Pro Dual's single analog input can be used for a high level device such as a CD player, or for a turntable with MM or MC pickup. The trick: Via "Record Active Matching" (RAM), many common MM and MC pickups can be called up online in the "Configurator", so that the phono stage automatically adjusts to them with regard to the connection values and gain. Manual changes remain possible at any time. In addition, you can digitize your analog records with up to 192 kilohertz clock rate, and vinyl freaks have 13 different equalization curves to chose from. It's almost ironic that all these fascinating and useful features are only the surroundings of the real sensation: the "Analog Digital Hybrid" amplifier (ADH). In a sophisticated, unique circuit, it combines an extremely low-distortion Class A stage with a highly effective Class D amp, which, in conjunction with the compact and powerful switch-mode power supply, develops up to almost 450 watts of impulse power, which is even delivered in a very relaxed way, as we experienced with B&W's full-grown 800D3. What the mono-double pulled off in the large STEREO listening room was a sensation and was a long way ahead of what an Expert 140 Pro can do solo. Devialet is one of those companies that you just go “wow” whenever you look at their products and, having heard such great things about them over the years, I really wanted to get the opportunity to find out for myself what the excitement is all about. Devialet began in 2007, set up by three friends; engineer Pierre-Emmanuel Calmel, entrepreneur Quentin Sannié, and designer Emmanuel Nardin. Later it was added to by Franck Lebouchard as CEO. They all had a vision of making a revolution in audio, and with one goal; to make it possible for large numbers of people to be able to listen to perfectly produced music using everyday sound devices. In order to meet their objective this Paris based company has registered over 160 patents covering many different areas of sound construction. Their Expert 220 Pro is just one of a series of very clever fully integrated amplifiers using Devialet’s own operating system based a Linux kernel. It is rated at 220WRMS (at under 6Ω) or can be bridged with a second machine to give 440WRMS. Their top Expert 250 Pro can be bridged to go from 250W to 1000W. CONSTRUCTION The laptop-sized/shaped Devialet is pure chromed heaven and includes a circular OLED display screen on its shiny top panel, the whole looking not too dissimilar to my bathroom scales, though significantly more expensive and more useful. The rear includes a plethora of connections and facilities including Wi-Fi and Ethernet via the AIR app for Mac and Windows (see later), asynchronous USB, S/PDIF and Toslink, RCA, which can be configured as line-level or phono inputs, and a further pair of RCAs that can be either L/R analogue or a pair of digital inputs. Access to the sockets is by sliding off the rear of the top panel and then replacing it after your pluggery to hide the unsightly plugs and cables; a clever idea. The digital inputs support PCM signals up to 24-bit/192kHz (AIR® universal streamer, UPnP, AES/EBU, Coaxial), Toslink 24-bit/96kHz, USB input handling up to PCM 32/192, and DSD64 from USB and coax inputs. All operation is through a Devialet designed operating system built on a Linux kernel with an ARM 1GHz Quadcore Processor (Freescale iMX6), 1GB of DDR3-RAM and 4GB of Flash memory. The fact that all analogue sources go through an ADC before being processed and then returned as with the digital sources to analogue before working their way to your speakers impressed me, as the sound from my analogue sources during my evaluation showed no sign of lacking musicality or depth of reality as can be the case from digital processing. This is quite a monster of an integrated in shiny chromed aluminium clothing. It even comes with a pair of white gloves so that you don’t get your fingerprints on the lovely chrome. The only control is the tear-drop shaped on/off button at the front with visuals from a circular display panel on the top. The rear is festooned with the programmable analogue and digital sockets. Only omitted are balanced analogue XLR inputs, though there wasn’t much space for them! It also comes with the most original and beautiful remote there is out there, which is as unique to Devialet as the design of the Pro itself. Carved out of a single aluminium block, the Expert Pro Remote is both very responsive and precise, using as it does zero latency radio transmission technology, and being fully omnidirectional means you don’t need to pick it up and point it at the amplifier. I only wish that it had a LCD display – as the idea of a remote is to sit and be lazy on your chair but should you actually wish to change source and need to see if you have selected correctly you will need to get up and view the display on the top of the main unit, which defeats the object of a remote. However, of course this might be a ploy to persuade you to actually get up and view and adore the beautiful shape and shiny chromed aluminium top; this unit is simply too gorgeous for you to be sitting away on your armchair, nor should the unit be hidden away in a shelf. Certain functions can be altered via the LCD display, such as treble, bass and balance, but can only be done with the remote in hand. If one 220 isn’t enough for you, you can join two together in dual mono to create effectively an Expert 440 Pro, achieving no less than 2 x 440 Watts of power, should you need it, as well as an improved performance (You can actually daisy-chain up to 8 amplifiers, should you own a stadium). Streaming services also permit UPnP, Airplay®, Roon and Spotify Connect, though for my review I used sources I was familiar with; notably laptop and DAP, SACD/CD and phono.

The Model 20 has been the mainstay of the Paxman range for many years. It is a completely original design that broke away from the three distinct layouts that have been used for much of the last century. Central to this design is the Merewether System, whereby the airflow travels in the same direction on both the F and Bb horns, minimising interruption from the turning rotor. The F and Bb sides of our full double horns are well-matched, and all models feature exclusive tuning slides for each side. Apart from the obvious benefits, the Bb tuning slide allows the player to add an extension with a manually operated A= valve. The mouthpipe main slide also helps to drain the instrument. The thumb valve is easily reversible to stand in either F or Bb. The model 20 is offered in any combination of three bores and three different alloys of brass.

Featuring two 6 ½“ bass woofers, the unique Linear Drive Magnet System as well as the breakthrough ribbon/soft dome hybrid tweeter the sound breaks with traditional loudspeaker conventions. The EPICON 6 relies on a 2½-way system as – compared to the EPICON 2 – it features an additional woofer kicking in below 600Hz. However, for the highest frequencies the EPICON 6 also incorporates a ribbon tweeter as part of the hybrid tweeter, in reality turning the speaker into a ‘2½ + ½-way’ construction. SMC - Linear Drive Magnet System For years designing magnet systems has been a DALI specialty. For the EPICON 6 we decided to challenge the highest market standards and to take magnet system design further than ever before in order to reduce distortion generated from less than perfect magnet systems. The answer turned out to be a Soft Magnetic Compound (SMC) material which offers exactly the right physical properties: Very high magnetic conductivity and very low electrical conductivity (approx. 1/10.000’s of iron). The result is a dramatic reduction in distortion caused by mechanical loss in the magnet system. The high magnetic conductivity is instrumental in more or less eliminating the frequency depended effect of hysteresis. The electrical non-conductive nature of the SMC material eliminates the induction of modulating magnet fields in the magnet gab and significantly lowers the eddy current on the pole piece caused by the movement of the voice coil. The resulting reduction of distortion is both very clearly measurable and indeed audible. HYBRID TWEETER For a transparent and solid rendering of even the most subtle high frequency details the finest DALI hybrid tweeter module is employed in the EPICON 6. The module consists of a newly developed 29 mm ultra lightweight dome tweeter and a 10 x 55 mm ribbon tweeter. Working in unison, the soft dome tweeter and the ribbon tweeter form the ideal high frequency solution. Combining the advantages of each tweeter’s unique properties is a technology which DALI has spent years in perfecting. Low resonance frequency, high power handling, and exceptional headroom for high sound pressure levels and extreme excursions are all characteristics of the oversized soft dome tweeter. Incorporating an ultra-thin magnetic fluid for cooling, the fluid has a very high flux saturation point for greater power handling. This also means superb control of coil movement – even at very high sound pressure levels. The ribbon tweeter features a broad frequency band and superb dispersion in the higher frequencies. Gently rolled in above 10 kHz, the ribbon reaches full contribution from 15 kHz to well beyond 30 kHz, far above the audible range. Both the soft dome and the ribbon tweeter are free of artefacts, e.g. resonances and high Q peaks within their working range. The Hybrid Tweeter Module features an extremely smooth and wide horizontal dispersion – one of our sound design trademarks. Even the detailing of the faceplate of the tweeter module is designed for optimal horizontal dispersion. WOOFER With the background of in-depth loudspeaker driver design for years, and having engineers with loudspeaker drivers manufacturing experience in-house, DALI started up the process of establishing in-house production of drivers in 2009. Today we are proud to present the result: DALI EPICON 6 woofers are not only developed - but also manufactured at the DALI headquarters in Denmark. At DALI we believe in designs based on low mechanical loss. Actually we were among the first to insist on controlling the frequency response by carefully balanced designs. We want the amplifier voltage and current to be the factor to control the frequency response by carefully balanced designs. The wood fibre technology has proven to be a key in reproducing the finest details and dynamics in the music with very low loss of information. Wood fibres add stiffness to very light paper cone membranes, ensuring non-uniform break-up characteristics within the material. The result is a structural stiffness showing top-class behaviour. The wood fibre cone terminates in a low-loss rubber surround that is fitted to a die cast aluminium chassis. Assembly of the cone, surround, voice coil and chassis is done in highly accurate tools for the maximum alignment accuracy. CABINET Working both as an acoustic tuned ‘spring’ for the drivers, as well as getting rid of reaction force (resonant) energy, the cabinet is an important part of the entire speaker system. A rigid construction is necessary to optimize the working environment for both woofers and tweeter. The front baffle, sides and top of the EPICON 6 are heated in a process that allows us to press it into an organic shape. This design increases overall rigidity and severely reduces cabinet resonances. Furthermore standing waves are practically eliminated as there are no parallel surfaces reflecting sound waves. With a thickness of 33 mm the dual-layer front baffle ensures that energy from the drivers is radiated as acoustic energy, and not as vibrations in the cabinet. The curved shape of the front baffle is also a contributing factor in ensuring a stable acoustic platform. At the very bottom of the cabinet, you will see that the hardwired crossover is mounted in its own enclosure - free from the dynamic variation of cabinet pressure inside the bass reflex enclosures. The finish of the cabinet is real wood veneer which is lacquered for a total of 10 times. And in between, each layer is hand polished to ensure a deep, high gloss and elegant surface. 10 times of lacquer also ensures a sturdy finish with a thickness of almost 2 mm. That means that the entire CNC cutting for drivers, ports and terminals is done after the paint process to ensure perfect fit. This new construction makes the new Planar 10 skeletal plinth 30% lighter than the original RP10 while offering increased rigidity over the previous model. DB Technology (Double Brace Technology) “Mass absorbs energy - lost energy equals lost music”! A super lightweight plinth combined with a ceramic top brace and phenolic resin bottom brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound, “stressed beam,” assembly. This rigid plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add unnatural distortions to the music. Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating record. The tonearm and cartridge must to be able to read accurately, directly from the platter. This unique Rega double brace solution enables this. RB3000 tonearm Rega is renowned for the quality of its tonearm bearing assemblies. In particular the accurate manufacturing of our bearing housing and bearing spindles. Technical characteristics such as "roundness" and "parallelity" are critical. Over the past three years Rega has found a new manufacturing process which improves on all these characteristics resulting in a micron perfect bearing fit. Hub Bearing assembly This latest design demonstrates attention to detail and modern CNC engineering advances. This allows new compromises, bringing Rega’s main bearing design closer than ever to the unachievable ideal.The Planar 10 uses a new low mass central bearing assembly. A single piece machined aluminum sub-platter and hardened tool steel spindle run inside a custom brass housing designed with improved mechanical integrity. The complete assembly is cleverly mounted within the chassis to eradicate unwanted potential energy being transferred or stored in the plinth. Ceramic Platter The P10 uses a custom ceramic, flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The latest platter features a modified construction with improved coupling to the sub platter. 24v Low noise motor assembly The Planar 10 uses Rega's latest generation, 24v, synchronous, low vibration motor technology. Uniquely mounted using the highest level of coupling while retaining higher vibration isolation than any previous model, this new motor mounting technique (mounted from the bottom) has been taken directly from the ultimate Rega turntable, the Naiad. This unique mounting method removes all stress from the motor body whilst holding the drive pulley perfectly still. This enables better speed stability and accuracy from the turntable. The reduced vibration and more rigid mounting deliver’s superior drive from the new EBLT drive belts. Each motor is hand tuned to match its own custom matched PL10 PSU power supply before fitting to the turntable to optimise the anti-vibration circuit. EBLT Drive Belts For three years Rega has been researching and developing with chemists the use of a bespoke new rubber compound for drive belts. Using a specialised curing system, the new drive belt offers superior consistency of modulus (a constant representing the degree to which a substance has a particular property, especially elasticity). These new belts are manufactured on Rega designed, state of the art, super-accurate tools (inspired by working with the manufacturer of high-tech Formula 1 engine parts) which produce 'perfectly round' and 'dimensionally accurate' belts, critical for perfect speed stability. PL10 PSU custom matched advanced power supply. The PL10 PSU offers the ultimate in motor control stability, convenient electronic speed change, advanced anti-vibration control and user adjustable electronic fine speed adjustment to ensure total accuracy and control over the life of the motor. Housed in Rega's latest custom designed case, the PL10 PSU is dedicated to running our 24v, low noise motor as quietly and as accurately as possible. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (Digital Signal Processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. This device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration removal and fine speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune each motor for optimal performance. Dust Cover The outer frame of the previous model has now been removed and a new stylish, removable, single piece dustcover has been introduced further reducing the overall mass of the turntable. Its density gives it the inertia necessary to provide a stable mechanical reference for optimal definition. The inside of the cabinet has no parallel side panels, and small Helmholtz resonators have been added to the lower section to prevent vertical standing waves. We chose glass as the material for the base of the loudspeaker to provide floor coupling, using spikes, which enabled the fastest propagation time possible, thus eliminating all halo effects in the bass. NO SACRIFICE OF PERFORMANCE TO AESTHETICS The design agency Pineau & Le Porcher designed Sopra with one rule : No sacrifice of performance to aesthetics. The Sopra line is destined for the most passionate sound enthusiasts. Its design favours performance, whilst bringing together the qualities expected of an object which will be integrated into very elegant interiors and décors. Lacquered or bloodwood finishes are associated to noble materials to create an elegant line. Substantial efforts were made to give the front a tidy appearance, particularly around the speaker drivers, to iron out any aspects which could afflict the acoustics or the appearance. Sopra’s very structure is articulated around the intermediate section. This injected polyurethane component allows for the upper and lower cabinets to be inclined for the "Focus Time" (acoustic convergence of the channels). DETAILS The main theme of Sopra is deliberately uncluttered, though it still offers connoisseurs the opportunity to enjoy all the small details. The grille with an incremental meshing motif protects the Beryllium tweeter and gives it a strong identity. This motif is repeated for sealing the curved back panel of the middle section. The terminal board, the thumb nuts and the adjustable spikes have all been specially designed for Sopra, as have the few visible screws, all of which were manufactured by watchmaking experts.
